Naperville house fire damage at $80,000

October 29, 2009

Three adults were displaced by an early Wednesday morning house fire in Naperville that did more than $80,000 in damage. Nobody was injured.

Authorities received a 911 call at 2 a.m. from a man reporting a fire at his house at 409 E. Eighth Ave. in Naperville, according to a Naperville fire release. A general alarm assignment — three pump units, two ladder trucks, two ambulances, one heavy rescue unit, two command officers and 24 total personnel — were sent to the scene. Naperville police also responded, and reported smoke in the area.

Responding fire units found smoke coming from the eaves and windows of a one-story, single-family home. A resident outside told firefighters all occupants were out of the home and the fire appeared to have started in the basement, the release said.

Firefighters entered the home with a hose and proceeded to the basement area through heavy smoke conditions, according to the release. The fire spread to the first floor through vertical openings in the home and firefighters extinguished a blaze at 2:16 a.m. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

The fire destroyed a workshop area in the basement and caused "extensive" smoke and heat damage throughout the rest of the house, the release said. Officials estimated the loss from the fire at more than $80,000.

Three adults living in the home will be displaced, and arrangements were being made for them to stay with nearby relatives, according to the release.

The Naperville Fire Investigation Team determined the fire began accidentally in the basement, but an exact cause has not been determined.
