Staying close helped this senior to realize childhood dream
Mom and Dad have retired, the kids are raised with their own families, and in some cases the dog is no longer around.
The available statistics we often read indicate that in many instances the retired years of seniors today may exceed the years of their working careers.
Now, what are the options available for many who find themselves at this stage of their lives? Often, they decide to sell their homes and relocate to a warmer climate. With the economy what it is today, selling a home quickly and relocating may not be a good option.
On the other hand, Naperville is a great place to live, lifelong friendships have been made plus adult children and grandchildren may be minutes away from their front door.
New friends have to be made and lifestyles are quite different. How often do we hear from seniors who chose this option and eventually move back to be with their friends and families?
I recently read the following on how to stay young: "KEEP LEARNING. Learn more -- about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever, even ham radio. Never let the brain idle."
"Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge."
There is a 33-year resident of our town who has chosen this option, and as she indicates, "It was one of the best decisions I have made!"
Her name is Gerri Frey, whose childhood goal was to someday learn to paint. After she retired from her job, and entered her senior years, she struck out to accomplish this goal.
"I was paging through a Park District catalog one day, and noticed that painting classes titled 'one-stroke painting' were available. I enrolled immediately, completed the course, but wanted to learn more.
Gerri's desire to learn more took her to schools in Washington and Florida.
"My enrollment and graduation from these well-known institutions resulted in providing me with a teaching certificate for one-stroke painting."
Teaching this art in various locations in and around Naperville followed.
"I wasn't finished yet," Gerri said. "Why not start a business, but how do you do that?"
Research followed, and an organization made up of retired business people in our community gave as much information and help as she needed. After all the dust had settled a business that might be called a love affair was started.
She was quoted as saying: "Becoming a senior has given me the luxury of time needed to accomplish my childhood goal. I am still living in Naperville near my family and friends, and also keeping my mind extremely active."
"I love Naperville and am very appreciative to all the people and town organizations that taught and assisted me in fulfilling my dream. It's now time for me to offer my works for fundraisers, etc., in an effort to give back to our community."
A quote that we as seniors should always keep in mind: "Make and keep cheerful friends. They encourage you to fulfill your dreams. The grouches pull you down."
