Democracy in shaping Asia, Africa

Nikhil Pal Singhis a historian of race, empire and culture in 20th century United States. He argues that democracy is a process that is constantly being questioned and challenged in the ongoing fight for justice in the United States and around the world.

Singh argues that the civil rights movement was not just about African-Americans' struggle for quality, but the question of whether the basic values of the United States were achievable for all. This question is equally significant to our encounters with the Asian and African worlds and the role democracy will play in shaping their futures.

Singh, a visiting associate professor of social and cultural analysis and history director of the program in American studies at New York University, will present "Democratic Possibilities in the Afro-Asian Century" at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Krasa Center presentation room.

Singh's visit is sponsored by the Global Studies Forum at Benedictine University. For more information about the Global Studies Forum, contact Tonia Rucker at 630-829-6250.
