Our community: Crime lab to test 'tainted' treats

October 29, 2009
Crime lab to test 'tainted' treats
As part of a Halloween safety initiative, DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba will open the DuPage County crime laboratory for 48 hours straight, making it available to DuPage County residents or police agencies requesting the testing of a suspicious or questionable treat.

This 48-hour watch will begin at noon Saturday and will conclude at 4 p.m. Monday.

Any parents who discover questionable Halloween treats are encouraged to contact their local police department. If you reside in unincorporated DuPage County, contact the sheriff's office at 630-407-2400 and a deputy will respond to your residence to collect the questionable treat.

"If you believe that your child's Halloween treat is suspicious, minimize handling of the item, place the item in a bag," said Zaruba. "Contact your local police or the sheriff's office and attempt to recall the location of where the questionable item was handed out."

A.D.O.P.T open house
As a result of difficult economic times and the enormous number of animals finding themselves without a home, A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter will be hosting an open house cat adoption event Monday through Nov. 8.

During the hours of noon to 8 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. weekends the shelter will be open to the public to come in and meet the animals.

For the one week only, all cats will be available to adopt for $25, and all kittens will be available to adopt for $50. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, FIV/feline leukemia testing and AVID microchip.

A.D.O.P.T. is at 420 Industrial Drive, Naperville. Call 630-355-2299.
