Downtown Joliet fireworks on the river at Bicentennial Park in 2007. GO file

Time to light up the skies Everyone loves a party, and America's birthday is a great reason to celebrate. With parades, picnics and patriotism on full display, the Fourth of July is some of the best of what our country has to offer. But the patriotic display isn't over when the sun sets; that's when the party is just getting started.

Summer good time for bargain shopping
The nice thing about your kids being small is that you can usually stock up on clothes for later seasons. When my kids were little, I always shopped the end of season sales and saved the new clothes for the following year. I saved a ton. I went to Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora to search out deals this week.

New Empress Casino making most of tough situation
Maybe it was because my expectations were too high, or perhaps I didn't know what to expect, but I came away from last weeks's re-opening of Empress Casino in Joliet with mixed feelings.

Welcome to Ribfest '09
Ribfest may be moving from Knoch Park, which touches a nerve with some of its closest neighbors. But after this year, the festival site will be cut by 5 acres, so discussions are under way that include possibly moving the 22-year-old fest to Nike Park.

She's a celebrity 'wrangler'
By day, Lori Levine's all girl from Long Island, her head full of Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Kim Kardashian and the Shiny Toy Guns as she holes up in her office with a smart young staff and a pooch named Sukie. By night, she's all rock 'n' roll, working a runway at the Hard Rock Cafe having "wrangled" said celebrities for the Power of Leather party, making sure they don't fall off their stilettos, experience a wardrobe malfunction or otherwise screw up in front of the cameras.
