Sometimes a team just has a bad night.
On Sept. 30, host Lisle faced off against Interstate Eight Conference Small Division foe Seneca.
The Lions (9-9, 2-3) battled the Fighting Irish (17-8, 4-2) tough in Game 1, 25-20.
But things collapsed in Game 2 for Lisle with Seneca cruising 25-9 to take the match.
"We are a lot better team then what showed up today. I am at a loss of words, it's shocking how a team can play so well in practice and then come out to a game and do the complete opposite, I don't have an answer for it, I wish I did. They played like they've never seen a volleyball before," Lisle coach Matt Hrubesky said.
Leading the way for the Lions was junior middle hitter Chelsea Peterson with three kills and a block. Juniors Colleen Drennan and Jordan Blechler each had two kills and a block. Senior setter Annie Antonsen led the way with six assists and two kills.
"We felt like we played really strong today, although Lisle's a very strong team, I don't think they came out and gave us their best game in Game 2, but we didn't play poorly either. We did an excellent job of shutting down their faster attacks in Game 2. All and all I think that we played really well," Seneca coach Karen Raney said.
The team's leader in kills was senior outside hitter Thomasina Lovett with six kills. Senior middle hitter Sammy Turner had four kills and seniors Mattie Watts and Emily Kaufmann had three and two kills respectively. Kaufmann also had six assists, one block and four aces. Leading the game in assists was senior setter Janelle Maierhofer with 10.
The Lions returned to practice Oct. 1 before resuming their schedule by hosting Reed-Custer on Oct. 2.
The team then travels to Chicago for The Latin School's tournament on Oct. 3 and 4.
With practice time limited by matches, Hrubesky is determined to make the most of the time the team has.
"We have a lot of work to do in practices, although I am at a loss for words on how like I said, a team can play so well in practice and not translate it into a game?"
Lisle is a young team with just four seniors on the roster and a bright spot on Sept. 30 was freshman outside hitter Vanessa Abenente who had a kill and an ace.
