Benet swimming takes second at sectional

Naperville North places fifth

November 21, 2008

Led by senior Sarah Galvin, Benet finished second behind two-time defending state champion Rosary at the Neuqua Valley Girls Swimming and Diving Sectional Nov. 15 in Naperville.

Benet tallied 169 points, finishing far behind the Beads (288) and just ahead of third-place Waubonsie Valley (166), Neuqua Valley (157), Naperville North (155) and Naperville Central (146).

Galvin won the 100-yard backstroke competition in 57.45 seconds and is aiming for the state title in that event. She also anchored all three relays races as the Redwings continue their amazing season.

The Redwings will bring a loaded roster to the state meet Nov. 21 and 22 at Evanston Township.

"We didn't have a pool to practice in," Benet coach Nicole Kothe said. "But I couldn't have asked for a better team. We'll have 14 girls on the deck next week, and three of our freshman qualified in their individual events."

Those freshmen, Tori Bertschy, Katey Katsafanas and Christina Favia, join veterans Colleen Webb, Maddi Webb and Cat Cortesio as qualifiers in individual events.

Naperville North's state qualifiers included Sarah Rendek, Emma Williams, Caroline Chang and Jen Law.

"All of our relays qualified, and we'll have a full 12-person team at state," North coach Kate Toennis said. "We reached our goal and couldn't ask for anything more."
