Mayor applauds Lisle awards

November 6, 2009

A meeting of the Lisle Village Board earlier this week was highlighted by a presentation made by Mayor Joe Broda in light of Lisle's receiving two Governor's Home Town Awards.

At a ceremony at the Executive Mansion in Springfield last month on October 29, the village's efforts were recognized among a group of 46 volunteer projects that received awards this year. The awards, which were given for an organ donor sign-up project and the Rain Barrel of Lisle initiative, were the fifth and sixth received by the village since 2002.

Broda said the involvement and encouragement of village leadership has been one reason why Lisle continues to be recognized.

"Whenever people in the village have stepped forward as volunteers, we've encouraged people to document what they're doing, and we tell them to run with it," Broda said. "We've always encouraged participation. The organ donor sign-up, which recruited 1,300 people, was amazing. We were told that number could save 25,000 lives."

The rain barrel project was supported by the local Chamber of Commerce, which has supported community art projects since 2002. The art project was recognized for increasing awareness of water resources and water quality, along with raising more than $4,000 for local charities.

In other actions, the Public Works Department also was recognized by the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District for helping evacuate 70 senior citizens from the Westbury Care Center this past September when the basement of the facility was flooded.
