Homer Glen has rules on burning

November 4, 2009

Before you burn, please learn!

Do you know that you can get a 95-gallon yard waste cart from Nu-Way Disposal for no charge?

The village of Homer Glen's contract with Nu-Way Disposal includes disposal of yard waste along with separate, no charge 95-gallon carts for this purpose.

If you must burn, do it safely and courteously. Make safety a priority.

Notify your immediate neighbors when you intend to burn so that they may take steps to minimize any negative effects they may experience.

Try to burn on sunny days rather than cloudy ones. Avoid burning on holidays.

The following rules will be enforced by Will County and the village of Homer Glen:

• Burning of trash, rubbish, garbage, general household waste and construction or demolition debris is prohibited.

• Only burn yard waste material that is completely dry to the touch.

• Never burn closer than 50 feet to any structure (house, garage, shed, fence, etc.).

• Never burn on any paved roadway or street or on any sidewalks or other public rights-of-way.

• Have a quick means of extinguishing the fire readily available, such as a garden hose or fire extinguisher.

• An adult must be present at all times.

• Never leave a fire unattended.

• Only yard waste generated by your property may be burned on your property.

• Keep fires at least 20 feet from any trees or shrubs.

• Never burn grass clippings.

For any questions, call the Homer Glen Code compliance officer at 708-301-0632 or the Homer Glen police nonemergency phone number at 708-301-9274.
