Providence has close call against Oswego
In Friday night's Class 6A second-round playoff game against Oswego, Providence had to get it done in overtime. And sure enough, they had enough in the tank to remain alive.
Joliet Catholic Academy coach Christine Scheibe didn't have to say much
to her team as it faced elimination at match point of the second game
of Thursday's Class 3A St. Francis Sectional final with the host
Spartans.
Bill Scheibe: He trained during the offseason, a cold and bitter winter followed
by a warm and soothing summer, to be Minooka's quarterback. Mitch
Brozovich, the junior achiever and heir apparent, was supposed to be
shelved by labrum shoulder surgery. That didn't happen, so deep safety Corey Krakowski went back to being the quarterback of the defense.
JCA held Troy Triad to negative yardage until a fourth-quarter drive
and junior wingback Josh Ferguson danced and juked his way to four long touchdown runs as
the Hilltoppers opened the Class 5A playoffs Saturday afternoon with a
48-7 thumping of Triad at Memorial Stadium.
With state powerhouse East St. Louis High School looming as the
potential challenge in the second round, the Minooka Indians (8-2) took care of
their own business with a 44-25 win over Edwardsville on Friday night
in the opening round of the 7A playoffs.
Providence atop list of area title hopefuls
The Joliet area has nine teams remaining in the state high school football playoff hunt, with second-round games on tap this weekend. And so far, we still have the potential to send a team to the championship game in any of the six classes from 3A through 8A.

As I reviewed the matchups in the nine second-round playoff football games involving area high schools, a thought occurred. Honestly, virtually every game can go either way.
Joliet 3, St. Louis 1 – let's build on that
Lincoln-Way East upheld the honor of the Joliet area last week when the Griffins opened the Class 7A state high school football playoffs with a 35-7 win over Belleville West. Joliet Catholic did the same with a 48-7 thumping of Troy Triad in 5A, and Minooka joined in with a 44-25 win over 7A foe Edwardsville.
Joliet area armed and dangerous for 2nd season
The nine Friday night high school football playoff games involving area schools are likely to be played in rain and wind. The four Saturday games should be a little chilly but not bad from a weather standpoint.
