PFN sweeps Romeoville

PLAINFIELD -- Outstanding pitching continued to be the norm Thursday for Plainfield North High School.

Sam Cashman and Mike Gislain combined on a 2-hitter as the Tigers beat Romeoville 4-1 in Southwest Prairie Conference play.

On Wednesday, Gislain and Mike Klett pitched North (20-9, 15-6) to 8-3 and 1-0 wins over Romeoville.

Cashman (5-3) picked up the Thursday victory, striking out 4, walking 4 and allowing 1 hit and 1 unearned run in 5 innings. Gislain pitched the final 2 innings.

"We received great pitching in this series against Romeoville," North coach John Darlington said. "And Romeoville can hit the ball, so we are pleased with what our pitchers accomplished the past two days."

North's Casey Wilgieficz had an RBI hit.

Storm shines for PFC

Plainfield Central 3, Minooka 0 -- At Plainfield, senior Jeremy Storm threw a 2-hit shutout for the Wildcats (10-18, 9-12) in the Southwest Prairie Conference win over the Indians (23-9-1, 17-4). Minooka downed the Wildcats 6-1 a day earlier.

Storm struck out 1 and walked 6. Plainfield Central scored a first-inning run and added 2 in the fifth.

Senior Tim Meyer homered, doubled and drove in a run for the Wildcats, who managed 7 hits. Alex Parks added a single, double and RBI. Eric Eicholtz had 2 hits (double) and RBI.

Minooka senior left-hander Tony Bucciferro took the loss, but whiffed 8 and walked none. Justin Troyner singled and doubled.

Highlights

Morris 7, Plainfield South 1 -- At Joliet, junior right-hander Matt Hussey (2-4) pitched the complete-game Southwest Prairie Conference victory for the Redskins (13-17, 9-12). He struck out 5, allowed 4 hits and walked 3.

Stephen Wagner had 3 hits (double, RBI). Adding 2 hits were Nathan Slattery (double, RBI), Logan Severson (double, 2 RBIs) and David Balzer.

For the Cougars, Bob Hansen struck out 6 and allowed 12 hits and 7 earned runs in 5 innings.

Lemont 8, Hillcrest 1 -- At Lemont, freshman southpaw Mike Medwed (1-0) threw a 2-hitter for the Indians (14-14, 9-6) in the South Suburban Blue victory. Medwed went the distance, striking out 6 and walking 1.

Kyle Goergen had 2 hits and an RBI. Ben Wagner added 2 hits with a double and RBI. Mike Dvorak drove in 2 runs.

"This was Mike's second start and he threw very well," Lemont coach Joe Rodeghero said. "He was around the plate and his ball was moving."

Lockport 7, Stagg 5 -- At Palos Hills, junior southpaw Jon Cisna (3-2) did it all for the Porters (18-8, 10-3) in their SouthWest Suburban Blue finale. Cisna had a season-high 11 strikeouts around a yield of 3 walks and 9 hits. Cisna, who leads the team with 4 homers, belted a 2-run shot in the fifth.

Anthony Munari and Joe Martin had 2 hits.

Lincoln-Way East 4, Homewood-Flossmoor 0 -- At Frankfort, Dietrich Enns threw a 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts for the Griffins (19-8, 8-5) in the SouthWest Suburban Red victory. The only hit off Enns was a leadoff single in the seventh to break up a perfect game.

Joe Turek belted a 2-run homer. Cody Erikson had an RBI single.

Andrew 5, Lincoln-Way Central 2 -- At Tinley Park, Nate Dobrez and Tim Ginville had RBI singles for the Knights (10-18, 3-10) in the SouthWest Suburban Red loss.

Seneca 5, St. Bede 1 -- At the 2A Ottawa Marquette Regional, the Irish (21-11) received a 2-hitter from winner Josh Higgins (7-2). He struck out 9 and walked 5. Josh Cryder delivered a 3-run double.

Seneca advances to a 1 p.m. Saturday championship game against either Coal City or Ottawa Marquette.

Wilmington 13, Plano 2 -- At the 2A Plano Regional, Jake VanDuyne pitched the semifinal win for the Wildcats. He allowed 6 hits, walked 4 and struck out 1.

John Kerulis homered and drove in 3 runs. VanDuyne (2 RBIs), Cort Scheel (RBI) and Neil Ruzich (2 RBIs) had 2 hits. Kyle Cragg had a hit and RBI.

Wilmington advances to a noon Saturday title game.
