BENSENVILLE -- The Plainfield South High School softball team easily won the Fenton Tournament championship on Saturday.
After beating Fenton 7-1, the Cougars defeated South Elgin 7-0 behind the 5-hit pitching of Alyssa Schrader.
In Game 1, Schrader threw a 3-hitter with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings for the Cougars (20-5). Gaby Liberatore pitched a scoreless seventh. Melissa Reyes had 2 hits with a home run and 3 RBIs. Adding 2 hits and RBIs were Mary Giancarlo and Liberatore. Kendall Weber tripled and Schrader doubled in a run.
Schrader struck out 3 and walked 1 in going the distance in Game 2. Krista Matsui (double) and Giancarlo (double, 2 RBIs) had 3 hits. Alexis Alvarez added 2 hits, Weber doubled in a run and Liberatore had 2 RBIs.
In Game 2, Brown pitched the win again. She whiffed 4, allowed 1 hit and walked none. Brianna Hickey (double) had 2 hits. Stefanie Churchwell doubled in 2 runs and Morgan Krisch had a run-producing double.
Joliet Township 9, Chicago Agriculture 1 -- At Joliet, Chloe Carroll (6-16) pitched a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts and no walks for JT (8-18) in the nonconference win. Colleen Cummings had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Kara Komp had 2 hits. Kellen Krupa's 3-run double highlighted a 6-run first.
JT coach Laurie Markatos-Pappas bested her sister, Jennifer Markatos, who coaches Chicago Agriculture.
Lemont 6, Plainfield North 5 -- At Plainfield, the Indians (16-8) scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to take the nonconference decision. Winner Kirsten Luevano was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBIs. Hayley Bridwell had ahit and RBI and Ariana Challenger produced a hit and scored twice. Luevano (16-8) struck out 6 and allowed 5 hits.
Peotone wins 2 -- The Blue Devils (19-9-1) won twice, beating TVL 2-1 and Hoopeston 5-1. In the opener, Jenny Picker (2-3-1) got the win. She threw a 3-hitter. Jackie Ryan struck out 13 and gave up 2 hits in Game 2.
Reed-Custer loses 2 -- At the Lisle tournament, the Comets (1-25) fell 4-3 to Westmont and lost 10-0 to Lisle. Becca Votta, Stefanie Vaughan and Mollie Underwood had hits against Westmont. Votta had the lone hit versus Lisle.
