MINOOKA -- A 4-run second inning was good enough to power the Minooka High School softball team to a 4-2 victory over Plainfield North in Southwest Prairie Conference play on Tuesday.
Lyndsay Doyle had 3 hits (double) and 2 RBIs for the Indians (14-9-1, 8-3). Andrea Carlson (RBI), Kelly Chesnut and Elyse Wright (RBI) all doubled.
Chesnut struck out 3 and walked none around a yield of 9 hits.
Julia Fink (6-0) threw a 1-hitter. She struck out 8.
Pacing a 14-hit attack was Taylor Tooley, who had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Casey Hiers went 3-for-3 and Olivia Scott had 2 hits.
The Wildcats had 6 hits in the third inning.
"Julia was in control all the way," Plainfield coach Anne Campbell said. "She pitched well."
Plainfield South 10, Oswego East 4 -- At Oswego, Alyssa Schrader struck out 15, allowed 5 hits and walked 1.
Mary Giancarlo had a double, triple and 3 RBIs for South (16-5, 11-2) in the Southwest Prairie Conference victory. Taya Meeder tripled and Jackie Frey had 2 hits (triple, RBI). Kendall Weber delivered an RBI hit.
A 3-run third inning and 4-run fourth gave the Cougars an 8-0 lead.
Coal City 9, Lisle 1 -- At Lisle, sophomore southpaw Kirsten Verdun (7-0) threw a 3-hitter with 16 strikeouts and 3 walks for the Coalers (19-0, 14-0) in the Interstate Eight Conference win.
Krista Watson had 3 hits (double) and 3 RBIs. Karla Shappell contributed 3 hits (double). Bryanna Phelan had 2 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBIs.
"We continue to get solid pitching and good hitting," Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. "This was another good all-around performance for us"
Herscher 6, Dwight 1 -- At Dwight, Haley Gaston had 3 hits with a double for the Trojans (20-4, 10-4) in the Interstate Eight Conference setback. Alyssa Henson singled and doubled. Chaney Tambling and Rachel Fink added hits.
Dwight pitcher Stephanie Humbert struck out 7, walked 2 and allowed 8 hits. The Trojans committed 5 errors.
Peotone 5, Wilmington 3 -- At Peotone, a 2-run seventh inning gave the Wildcats (9-13, 8-7) the Interstate Eight Conference victory. Lexi Southall tripled. Kaitlin Nolan delivered a 2-run single. Erin Murphy had 2 hits.
