ROMEOVILLE -- Basketball is a team game, a fact both coaches emphasized after Romeoville High School defeated Lincoln-Way East 59-55 in two overtimes Friday night.
"This was just a great team effort tonight," Romeoville coach Jeff Bambule said following the win that evened his team's record at 2-2. "At different points in the game, we had different guys carrying the load for us. That was real nice to see."
The Spartans trailed 38-33 entering the fourth quarter, but scored the first seven points to take a 40-38 lead. Divinci Smith started the run with a 3-pointer, then hit 2-of-2 free throws to tie it. Earl Bell, who led the team with 20 points, drove the baseline for a layup to give Romeoville the lead.
Lincoln-Way East's John Lorenz tied it with a basket of his own before Harryl Avery got a layup off a steal to give Romeoville a 42-40 lead. After a free throw by East's Derek Severson, Ivan Smith sandwiched a pair of baskets off assists from Bell around a hoop by East's John Anstett to put the Spartans ahead 46-43.
