Reed-Custer downs Coal City in 3

SENECA -- Reed-Custer High School battled three games to get past Interstate Eight Conference rival Coal City, but the Comets' fell to Chicago Christian in Thursday's championship match in the Class 2A Seneca Volleyball Regional.

Reed-Custer slipped past Coal City (17-18, 6-4) in the semifinals 26-24, 15-25 and 25-21. However, the Comets fell 25-13, 25-15 to Chicago Christian in the regional finals.

Coal City was led by Karli Tjelle's 16 points and 10 digs against Reed-Custer. Brittni Manietta had 9 kills for the Coalers.

Chicago Christian advances to the Herscher Sectional on Thursday. The Knights will play Clifton Central at 5 p.m.

Peotone also advanced to the Hescher Sectional with two regional wins. After beating Beecher 25-15, 25-16 in the Beecher Regional semifinals, the Blue Devils downed Manteno 16-25, 25-23, 25-11 in the finals. Manteno advanced with a 25-17, 25-19 victory over Wilmington.

Peotone plays the El Paso Region winner at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Herscher Sectional.

High school volleyball
Dwight wins -- At the Class 1A St. Anne Regional, the Trojans (24-6-2) beat Grant Park 25-9, 25-15 in the finals to advance to Thursday's Varna-Midland Sectional for a 5 p.m. semifinal match.

Dwight's Carly Perschnick had 12 kills and Malorie Kennedy 15 points and 7 aces in the title match.

Perschnick's 12 kills and 10 pionts led Dwight to a 25-14, 25-18 semifinal win over Cissna Park-Crescent Iroquois. Amie Hogan had 36 assists on the night.

College volleyball
Lewis ranked No. 6 -- Lewis University women's volleyball team holds the No. 6 spot in the latest NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings. The Flyers (22-3, 12-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) play at Saint Joseph's and region leader Indianapolis this weekend.

The regional rankings determine which teams advance to the NCAA Division II Championship in November. The top eight teams from each of the eight regions in Division II earn entry into the tournament. The Flyers have seven previous NCAA Championship appearances.

The other teams in the top eight of the Great Lakes Region are Indianapolis, Grand Valley State, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Northern Kentucky, Ashland, Hillsdale, and Northern Michigan.

Women's soccer
McKendree 1, Lewis 0 -- At Lebanon Wednesday, Lewis concluded its season with the non-conference setback. The only goal of the game came at 18:51 by McKendree's Sarah Ryan, assisted by Brittany Fuzessery.

Lewis junior Courtney Kettel recorded four shots on goal. The Flyers outshot the Bearcats 9-8 and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Goaltender Megan George recorded 7 saves for Lewis (6-11-1, 4-8-1) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference game.

The Lewis women's soccer program took a major step forward under first-year head coach Chris Koenig. The Flyers finished with their most conference victories since 1999 and tied for the most overall victories since 2000. Lewis registered conference victories over two teams in the GLVC Tournament, Wisconsin-Parkside and Saint Joseph's. The Flyers also played third-place Drury to a tie. Drury is currently fifth and Wisconsin-Parkside is seventh in the Great Lakes Regional Rankings.

Individually, Kettel had a breakout season, scoring nine goals, tied for fourth in the GLVC. Sophomore Amy Foran notched 7 goals after entering the season with none.

South Suburban Blue
Indians honored -- Lemont placed five on the All-South Suburban Blue volleyball team, including senior libero Catherine Languido, an all-state nomination. The others were senior middle hitter Colleen O'Hara, junior outside hitter Jenny Litoborski, senior right side Aubrey Sniegowski and senior right side Sara Ahline. Senior Joanie Faletto was special-mention.
Local golf
Parris cards ace -- Former major league pitcher Steve Parris used an 8-iron to fire a hole-in-one on the 150-yard, par-3 seventh hole at Inwood recently. Bob Dickey and Pat Minor witnessed the feat. Parris played high school baseball at Joliet West and then went on to enjoy collegiate success at the University of St. Francis.
