Pope reigns for Lockport

LOCKPORT -- Lockport High School senior freestyler Courtney Pope was in a pool of her own Saturday in the Lockport Sectional girls swimming and diving meet.

Pope not only won four events, she established pool records of 23.83 seconds in the 50 free, 1:52.38 in the 200 free, 51.90 in the 100 free, 5:02.41 in the 500 free in leading the Porters to second place.

Sandburg won the sectional with 314 points to Lockport's 302. Andrew was third with 198, followed by Lincoln-Way West with 140. Among other area schools, Morris finished seventh, Joliet ninth, Providence Catholic 10th and Joliet Catholic 12th.

Winners and others meeting predetermined qualifying times advance to next weekend's state meet.

Morris' Alyssa Applebee won the diving competition with 403.95 points.

The Lockport 200 medley relay won in 1:50.63. The unit included sophomore Jill Rothgery, junior Kaylie Webster, junior Molly Knowles and junior Chelsea Coneset.

Lincoln-Way West freshman Emily Gallagher won the 200 IM in 2:12.41 and Lockport's Webster also advanced , finishing second in 2:12.69.

Corneset won the 50 free in 25.24.

Lockport juniors Molly Knowles and Webster were 1-2 in the 100 fly in 59.15 and 59.81, respectively. Both advance.

The Porters' Rothgery won the 100 back in 58.85. Lockport's 400 free relay finished second in 3:35.04 and advanced. Pope, junior Abby Rodewald, Knowles, and sophomore Kirsten Zborek were on that unit.

LWE Sectional
Lincoln-Way East prevails -- Lincoln-Way East won the sectional it hosted with 317 points to 203 for runnerup Lincoln-Way North. Homewood-Flossmoor was third and Lincoln-Way Central fourth.

Lincoln-Way East won the 200 medley relay in 1:51.41 and North also advanced, finishing second in 1:51.81. The East swimmers were sophomore Sloane McDermott, junior Callan McDermott, freshman Jana Witulski and freshman Katie Smith.

For North, sophomore Megan Wortel, freshman Cheyenne DeGraff, sophomore Jenna Tasic and senior Taylor Nelson competed in the 200 medley.

Three area swimmers move on in the 200 IM. East senior Alyssa Toland won in 2:07.32, a pool record. DeGraff also surpassed the previous pool record with her 2:09.00, and East junior Callan McDermott swam a 2:10.96.

East freshman Katie Smith won the 50 free in 24.88.

North senior Jessica Collins was the diving champion with 365.30 points.

Lincoln-Way Central sophomore Morgan Graves was No. 1 in the 100 fly in 59.80. East junior Mary Reilly claimed the 100 free in 54.30. Toland prevailed in the 500 free in 5:10.05.

East won the 200 free relay in a pool-record 1:38.88. The swimmers were Smith, freshman Jana Witulski, Reilly and Toland.

Lincoln-Way Central sophomore Danikela Jackovich was second in 59.86 and Lincoln-Way East's Sloane was third in 1:00.35, good enough for both to advance in the 100 back.

North's DeGraff won the 100 breast in 1:06.91.

East captured the 400 free relay in 3:36.56. Freshman Taylor Jach, Smith, Reilly and Toland were the swimmers.
