NEW LENOX -- Size mattered.
At least it did Friday night in Lincoln-Way West's 45-35 loss to Marmion.
The Cadets, using an offensive line that averaged 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, overpowered the Warriors, as did their big running backs.
T.J. Lally (6-0, 215) ran for 3 touchdowns in the first half, including a 40-yarder, while 6-2, 225 running mate Bobby Winkel scored from 18 yards out as Marmion built a 34-7 halftime lead.
The Warriors (1-6) got their only touchdown of the first half on a 7-yard pass from Justin Butterfield to Jimmy McHale. West was held to negative-1 yard rushing before halftime.
In the second half, Butterfield went 13-of-16 for 189 yards and 2 touchdown passes as the Warriors fought back. His TD passes were 21 yards to Nick Bellamy and 31 yards to McHale. He also had TD runs of 29 and 1 yards.
Despite the second-half outburst, the Warriors couldn't pull off the miracle comeback. Lally ran 55 yards for his fourth touchdown to make it 45-27 with 4:35 to play.
Defensively, Kevin Kensel led West with 11 tackles and 5 assists, while Dan Pfeider had 8 tackles and 5 assists. McHale had 8 tackles and 4 assists. The Warriors defense held the Cadets to just 4 second-half first downs.
But, in the end, Marmion and Lally (8 carries, 126 yards, 4 TDs) were too much.
Bellamy came alive in the fourth quarter with 37 of his 46 yards.
