NEW LENOX -- The Joliet Township High School boys soccer team began its season on a positive note Tuesday.

Senior forward Andy McKanna scored 4 goals and junior forward Octavio Caballos added 2, leading JT to a 6-0 win over Tinley Park in the Windy City Ram Classic played at Providence Catholic.

Senior goalkeeper Mike Vertin made 2 saves for his 16th career shutout.

The Steelmen continue action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday when it takes on Providence Catholic in New Lenox.

Boys soccer
Providence Catholic 2, Crete-Monee 1 (penalty kicks) -- At the Windy City Ram Classic, the Celtics (1-1) had 4 penalty kicks while the Warriors scored 2. Tallying penalty kick goals for Providence were Jeff Hayes, Joe Saavedra, J.R. Galick and Lupe Martinez, who scored in the first half. The Celtics' Alec Pickett made 5 saves.

Naperville Central 7, Minooka 0 -- At Minooka, Andy Pieczynski made 7 saves for the Indians (0-1-0) in the nonconference loss.

Wilmington 3, Reed-Custer 2 -- At Wilmington, Nick Zarecki and Nic Hayden scored goals for Reed-Custer (0-1-0). Zarecki added an assist. Brian Hedricks made 14 saves for the Comets.

Other scores -- Plainfield South 2, Lincoln-Way Central 1.

Men's soccer
JJC 6, Waubonsee 0 -- At Sugar Grove, Matt Philibin and Eric Razo scored 2 goals for the Wolves (1-0-1). Ahmed Rachid and Luis Rodriguez scored once. Adding assists were Zeferino Aguirre, Kevin Reveles, Bryce Anderson and Arturo Rios. Shaun Etherington recorded 2 saves for the shutout.
Boys golf
Lincoln-Way East 187, Benet Academy 192 -- East's Kathy Sterling was medalist with a 41. Julia Radgowski (44), Paige Pollak (51) and Sarajane Crowley (51) also scored for the Griffins.

Providence 162, JCA 174 -- At Joliet Country Club, the Celtics' Ken Feldmeir was medalist with a 39. Also scoring for Providence were John Thomas (41), Jeremy Lacky (41) and Ryan Monahan (41).

For JCA (3-1), Kevin Annis shot 40, Ian O'Connor had 45, Alex Fried (44) and Brett Rocheleau (45)

Lockport 150, Lincoln-Way Central 174 -- At Broken Arrow, the Porters' Jake Kuper shot a 1-under-par 35. Adam Saban had 37 while John Beissmann and Ryan Frederick had 39s in the Southwest Suburban play.

Ryan Carney shot 40 for the Knights. Rick Palonis and Kevin Benney fired 44s and Nathan Martinez had 46.

Sandburg 147, Lincoln-Way East 154 -- At Little Garden, Brian Bullington had a 36 and Chris Holley a 38 for East, which received 40s from Jay Bushen, Shane McGowan and Dan Petrarca.

Lemont 169, Oak Forest 174 -- At Dunne National, Nick Cyr and Jim Loukota shot 41s for the Indians (2-0, 1-0) in the South Suburban Blue opener. Rob Smierciak had 43 and Nick Szerzinski had 44.

Dwight 166, El Paso 183 -- At the Dwight Country Club, Michael Halloran shot a 38 to earn medalist honors in the Trojans' win. Also scoring for Dwight (1-1) was Logan Krople (41), Jared Perry (42) and Noah Trainor (45).

Girls golf
Plainfield South 208, Romeoville 269 -- At Prairie Bluff, the Cougars (1-0, 1-0) posted the Southwest Prairie win. Jordan Bishop was medalist with a 47. Other scores for South were Keleigh Distasio (50), Sam Cichy (55) and Bridgette McGuire (56).

Romeoville's Frankie Normand shot 63, Dallyce Wallace had 65, Lynn Samuelson 69 and Breanna Carlson and Ohrlstina Gonzalez fired 72.

El Paso beats Dwight -- For the Trojans, Kirbie Gereaux shot a 44 and Cameron Anderson had 67.

College volleyball
USF 25-25-25, Purdue North Central 12-14-13 -- At Joliet, not only was it the season opener, but for University of St. Francis' defending Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference co-champions, it was also the 2008 league opener. And the Saints debuted with a convincing three-set sweep of first-year CCAC member Purdue North Central.

Senior outside hitter Elaina Ambler, a first-team all-CCAC selection a year ago, picked up where she left off last season and led the Saints with 12 kills and just a single hitting error in 21 attack attempts. Ambler also added 11 digs, second only to junior all-conference libero Courtney Ambrosch from Joliet Township who finished with 13.

Ambler had lots of help on the offensive side as junior right-side attacker Kara Decker contributed 7 kills and no hitting errors in 15 tries. Sophomore outside hitter Kyrsten Becker added 6 kills and she also contributed 8 digs.

Sophomore Lauren Hoffman from Plainfield South led the Saints with 3 blocks, including a pair of solo blocks. Junior setter Kelsey Polte ran the offense with 24 assists and led the Saints with 3 service aces.
