Sewing's double ignites JT; Providence prevails
JOLIET -- A big fifth inning Monday helped propel Joliet Township High School to a 5-2 softball victory over Bolingbrook in SouthWest Suburban Blue play.
A 3-run fifth gave JT (9-19, 4-7) a 3-2 lead over the Raiders. Colleen Cummings walked to start the rally and Rachel Cook singled. Emily Sewing contributed a 2-run double before Staci Kapinus' run-producing single.
On the mound, Chloe Carroll (7-17) picked up the win. She yielded 7 hits, struck out 5 and walked 2.
Kapinus and Kara Komp had 2 hits.
Sarah Budz homered and drove in 2 runs. Michelle Karr doubled in a run. Emily Perish (12-7) pitched the win.
Coal City 15, Westmont 0 -- At Westmont, the Coalers (23-0, 16-0) concluded regular-season play undefeated by posting the Interstate Eight Conference win. Winner Kirsten Verdun and Katie Crawford combined on the 4-hit shutout. Verdun struck out 5, Crawford 3.
"Every player contributed in this game," Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. "This was a tremendous win and a great way to conclude our regular season. To go undefeated in the conference says something about our players."
The Coalers scored 9 runs in the first 3 innings. Karla Shappell had a 3-run triple and 4 RBIs. Krista Watson singled and doubled.
Coal City begins play in the 2A Plano Regional at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Wilmington 11, Reed-Custer 1 -- At the Class 2A Wilmington Regional, winner Tiffany Tutor scattered 6 hits for the Wildcats (11-14) in the first-round victory. She helped her cause with 3 RBIs. Kaitlin Nolan (double), Liz Alberico (double) and Lexi Southall had 2 hits. Erin Murphy and Anna Strong also doubled.
For the Comets (1-26), Stefanie Vaughan tripled and Lauren Urban had an RBI.
