Minooka girls move to 11-1 in SPC with win
JOLIET -- A quick start Monday pushed the Minooka High School girls to a 60-45 win over Plainfield South in Southwest Prairie Conference basketball play.
The Indians (17-7, 11-1) led 17-6 after one quarter and 31-19 at halftime. Jackie Selfridge led the win with 12 points. Elyse Wright had 10, Lauren Kijowski 8.
South's Morgan Williams finished with 10 points and Brittany Williams added 8.
Manteno 44, Wilmington 35 -- At the Class 2A Bishop McNamara Regional, Wilmington junior Tara Spell scored 17 points, giving her 1,006 for her three-year varsity career. She also added 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (5-22). She has 949 career rebounds. Karleigh Cherveny had 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Ridgewood Baptist 51, Lake County Christian 32 -- At Joliet, the Rams (15-6) were led by Jessica Menard's 24 points. Mary Schaack had 13 points and 3 assists. Christen Johnson had 6 points and 5 rebounds and Kendra Connor contributed 8 assists.
Wiatr finished with 11 points and shot 4-of-6. Senior guard Juozas Pranckevicicus fniished with a game-high 25 points, including 5 3-pointers.
Wertz was one of two event winners for the Lewis women and one of 10 members of the women's team to earn team points in the meet with a top-six finish. She won the mile with a time of 5:04.37, securing her second NCAA provisional of the indoor season.
Sophomore Christine Kustra was the other individual event winner for the Lewis women. She placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5 ¼. Kustra also scored with a third in the long jump (16-5) and a fourth in the 200 meters (26.75).
For the men, Barnas' provisional mark occurred with a win in the shot put. He threw for 53-10 1/4, topping his previous provisional mark of 52-4, set last week. Barnas also scored in the weight throw, finishing fourth with a toss of 47-9 ¼.
Freshman Andy Lepkowski won the mile (4:16.64) and senior Adrian Myers took first in the 800 meters (1:57.27).
USF ties for 12th -- At Kenosha, Wis., University of St. Francis earned a season-high 13 points to place in a two-way tie for 12th place at the Carthage Invitational.
Sophomore Jessica Horn played a role in nearly half the team's overall point total, earning six points between the long jump and 800 relay. Horn placed seventh in the former event, where she authored a jump of 16 feet, 2.25 inches. She then ran the second leg on the relay team, which picked up four points with its fifth-place finish and 1:56.56 time.
Joining Horn in the relay event was her twin sister Jennifer, sophomore Jennifer Beard from Plainfioeld Central High School and freshman Allison Osborne from Seneca.
USF's top overall finisher was sophomore Meghan Bannatz, who used a time of 20:02 in the 5,000 to place fourth.
St. Francis also picked up one point each from eighth-place finishes by freshman Aprille Froelichin the 400(1:08.99) and freshman Brittany McAllister from Plainfield South in the 800 (2:36.45).
Freshman Kevin Coates was the first Flyer to win a race, stopping the clock at 9:35.34 for an NCAA B time in the men's 1000 yard freestyle. Freshman Deirdre Mikolajcik made it back-to-back Lewis victories, winning the next race with an NCAA B time of 1:56.66 in the women's 200 yard freestyle.
Mikolajcik won the 100 backstroke, this time with a time of 1:01.08, missing another NCAA B time by less than a second. Sophomore Jason Ament notched an NCAA B time and a victory in the men's 500 freestyle (4:42.10). Senior Stephanie White-Olson won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.50).
