Six area teams qualify for state meet

Joliet-area high school girls bowled like champions Saturday in three separate bowling sectionals.

The area will be sending six teams to the state tournament next Friday and Saturday at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford.

Lockport High School and Plainfield Central were first and second, respectively, at the Rich East Sectional. Morris and Minooka captured 1-2 at the Dixon Sectional while Plainfield North won the Hinsdale South Sectional crown. Lemont took second.

Lockport won the Rich East Sectional by rolling a 5,677. The Wildcats, led by senior Alyssa Ennis' first-place effort of 1,200, also advanced with a second-place finish of 5,489.

Lincoln-Way Central senior Jessica Spires will also advance to the state tournament by virtue of her third-place finish of 1,159. She had a top game of 246.

"The girls rolled very well today," Lockport assistant coach Andy McCormick said. "Consistency had to one of the big keys for us. They really wanted it."

Pacing Lockport was senior Casey Kernbauer with a second-place effort of 1,164. She had a high game of 224 and a 209.

Also placing for Lockport were sophomore Caitlin Hofman (4th place, 1,159 series, 213 high game), sophomore Mollie Sloyan (6th, 1,154, 217), junior Morgan Sharp (12th, 1,107, 234) and junior Devan Wysocki (16th, 1,093, 227).

The Porters, who finished the day with a top effort of 985, won state championships in 1994 and '99 state championship.

Following Ennis' lead for Plainfield Central was Paige Jozwiak, who was seventh with a 1,154. She had high games of 204 and 203.

Other individuals for Plainfield Central included Sam Sumner in ninth place (1,145, 235 game), Chelsea Oshita (1,006, 182) and Tricia Zimmerman (984, 214).

Plainfield South was third with a 5,443. Scoring for the Cougars were Nicole Hamilton (1,148, 235), Amanda Chamberlain (1,109, 220), Stacie Brander (1,052, 236), Olivia Hendrickson (1,011, 209) and Lisa Janasik (931, 202).

Joliet Township placed fourth with a 5,225. JT's top scorer was Alyssa Plunge with an 1,106. (213 top game). Ashley Bright shot a 1,065 (212), Lauren Pirc had a 1,061 (201), Ashley Banevicius had a 998 (180) and Amanda Buldak rolled a 995 (197).

Lincoln-Way East was eighth with a 4,969. The Griffins' top scorers were Jackie Denardo (1,099, 202) and Emily Outman (976, 204).

Lincoln-Way Central placed ninth with a 4,774. After Spires, Ashley Krohn had a 955 (180).

Plainfield North took top honors at the Hinsdale South with a 5,784. Tigers' senior Shannon Grimes won the tournament with a 1,307 and teammate Debra Belobraydich, a junior, rolled an 1,176. She placed fourth.

Rounding out Plainfield North's effort were Meghan Hardy with an 1,132, Megan Hoppe with an 1,118 and Katelyn Wunglueck with a 1,051.

Lemont was second at Hinsdale South with a 5,428. The Indians' top shooter was Annette Dzielski with an 1,112. Ashley Brandt fired an 1,110, Fallon Jarboe had a 1,084, Jamie Budziak shot 1,065 and Nicole Chliapala had a 1,057.

A 5,954 effort by Morris earned it the Dixon championship.

The Redskins' Mary Bellus was third (1,284) and Amanda Copley placed fourth (1,268). Samantha Farmer had 1,161, Ashley Copley shot 1,156 and Jessica Laabs had a 1,085.

Minooka was second with a 5,411. The Indians' Amanda Warwick had a 1,297, good for second place. Stefanie Stout had a 1,135, Liz Albert shot a 1,077, Alyssa Poole a 657, Alyssa Rak a 629 and Danielle Drummond 616.
