Lincoln-Way Central gets around Plainfield S.

January 22, 2008

From staff reports JOLIET -- Plainfield South kept it close for a half, but Lincoln-Way Central turned up the defensive pressure and took care of business after halftime in a 69-50 nonconference win over the Cougars Monday night.

Lincoln-Way Central freshman guard Kaitlyn Ray poured in 24 points -- including 6 3-point field goals -- and senior center Rachel Larson added 18 to lead the winning Knights (13-7).

Plainfield South scored 36 points in the first half and found itself trailing the favored Knights by just 4 points, 40-36, at halftime.

The Cougars, though, were held to just 5 points in the third quarter and managed only 9 in the fourth period as Lincoln-Way pulled away.

Jackie Frey and Alexis Alvarez each scored 11 points for Plainfield South and Morgan Williams added 10.

Highlights
Reed-Custer 69, Beecher 46 -- At Braidwood, senior guard Marisol Arreola scored 28 points and notched a school-record 8 3-point field goals as Reed-Custer (16-7, 8-0) exploded to a 17-0 lead and went on to defeat Beecher in the nonconference game.

Arreola scored 11 of the Comets' 24 points in the opening period and hit 4 threes for 12 points in the third quarter. She got double-digit scoring help from junior center Kelsi McMahan who finished with 10 points.

"We started out hot in the first quarter," Reed-Custer coach Matt Peterson. "Our defense allowed too many points to suit me, but that comes with the territory a little bit when you have a big lead. Our bench gave us a great deal of minutes tonight and everyone stepped up."

The Comets resume Interstate Eight Conference play on Thursday at home against Westmont.

Gardner-South Wilmington 59, Peotone 44 -- At Gardner, the Panthers raced out to a 15-7 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 33-17 by halftime en route to the 15-point nonconference win.

Anna Nugent led Peotone (9-14) with 12 points and Stefanie Campbell added 10, giving the duo exactly half of the Blue Devils' total points on the evening. Kelly Bisping led Peotone with 13 rebounds.
