Minooka takes title; Kontos rolls 300

January 13, 2008

ROMEOVILLE -- The Minooka High School boys bowling team adopted a cross country-like strategy in the Southwest Prairie Conference tournament.

Minooka ran down the lanes in a pack.

The Indians bunched five individuals in the top 20 and captured the overall conference title with 48 points Saturday at Brunswick Zone XL.

Plainfield South's John Kontos -- the son of Town & Country proprietor George Kontos -- performed like a young man who grew up on the lanes and was crowned the individual medalist.

Kontos averaged 220 for six games and put together a series of 1341. Included was a perfect game -- 12 straight strikes and a score of 300 -- to cap his day.

Plainfield Central's Terry DeLoach placed second with a high game of 257 and a series of 1332. Plainfield North's Patryk Bec and Plainfield South's Kyle Heywood tied for third with identical series totals of 1310. Jason Smith of Romeoville finished fifth with 1293.

Minooka was paced by Sam Biesack (eighth, 1252), Brad Greenup (12th, 1221), Steve Kettman (14th, 1168), Chris Ruffino (15th, 1149) and Ryan Lakota (16th, 1099). The Indians had a pinfall total of 5889 and earned 11 points. They started with 37 and were able to hold off Plainfield South's bid to overtake them.

South actually had the day's highest pinfall total -- 6142. The Cougars started 19 points, earned 23 more and came in with a total of 42, good for second place.

Plainfield Central took third with 33 points, followed by Plainfield North 25 and Romeoville 16.

South's Calvin Hendricksen led the second five in the individual chase. He placed sixth with a series of 1284.

Boys highlights

SouthWest Suburban Conference -- At AMF Lanes, Bolingbrook, the one-two punch of Eddie Cetwinski and Steve McNellis powered Lincoln-Way Central into a tie for the overall conference title. The Knights, with a pinfall total of 6284, won Saturday's tournament and earned 8 points. They climbed to a season total of 15 points and tied Lockport for the SWSC crown.

The Porters also finished with 15 points after putting together a pinfall total of 5848 and placing second in Saturday's tournament. Bolingbrook placed third with 11 points, followed by Andrew 9, Lincoln-Way East and Andrew, each with 7, Stagg with 6 and Joliet Township with 2.

Cetwinski rolled a six-game series of 1350 to capture individual medalist honors. McNellis was second with 1294.

Lockport's Andrew Chang placed third with 1289, followed by Lincoln-Way Central's Cody Vogler and Sandburg's Andy Jerrick in a tie for fourth with 1241.

Girls highlights

Lady Bengal Invitational -- At Oak Forest, Bolingbrook's Deanna Ptak won the individual battle and Plainfield North took the team title.

Ptak had a six-game series of 1332 to capture medalist honors. Her hot bowling helped Bolingbrook nab a top-10 finish -- seventh -- with a pinfall total of 4902.

North took home the championship with a total of 5562. The Tigers were paced by Megan Hoppe (third, 1190), Debra Belobraydich (sixth, 1142), Katelyn Wungluieck (eighth, 1109) and Shannon Grimes (10th, 1101).

"This was a huge day for this program," North coach Ron Lear said. "Winning a tournament for the first time can be a big hurdle to climb, but today all five girls came together for the victory."

Bolingbrook's Kaila Kuelz was the only other area individual to finish in the top-10. She placed ninth with 1104. Romeoville finished 10th in the team chase with 4663.

Fred Green Classic -- At Bensenville, three Lockport girls placed in the top-25 to lead the Porters to a second-place finish in the 24-team tournament. Lockport had a pinfall total of 5438, second only to Schaumburg's 5819.

The Porters were paced by Mollie Sloyan (14th, 1135), Casey Kernbauer (17th, 1117) and Devan Wysocki (24th, 1073).
