Minooka takes title; Kontos rolls 300
ROMEOVILLE -- The Minooka High School boys bowling team adopted a cross country-like strategy in the Southwest Prairie Conference tournament.
Minooka ran down the lanes in a pack.
The Indians bunched five individuals in the top 20 and captured the overall conference title with 48 points Saturday at Brunswick Zone XL.
Plainfield South's John Kontos -- the son of Town & Country proprietor George Kontos -- performed like a young man who grew up on the lanes and was crowned the individual medalist.
Kontos averaged 220 for six games and put together a series of 1341. Included was a perfect game -- 12 straight strikes and a score of 300 -- to cap his day.
Plainfield Central's Terry DeLoach placed second with a high game of 257 and a series of 1332. Plainfield North's Patryk Bec and Plainfield South's Kyle Heywood tied for third with identical series totals of 1310. Jason Smith of Romeoville finished fifth with 1293.

The Indians had a pinfall total of 5889 and earned 11 points. They started with 37 and were able to hold off Plainfield South's bid to overtake them.

"This was a huge day for this program," North coach Ron Lear said. "Winning a tournament for the first time can be a big hurdle to climb, but today all five girls came together for the victory."
