Meyers, Lincoln-Way C. capture Knights Classic
NEW LENOX -- Led by junior forward Kayla Meyers' game-high 20 points, the Lincoln-Way Central High School girls basketball team won its Knights Classic championship on Saturday with a 55-30 win over Plainfield North.
Senior center Rachel Larson chipped in with 13 points and senior guard Cass Gunderson scored 12 for the Knights.
Plainfield North (1-2) was led by Kayleigh Blaney's 9 points and 6 from Lissette Borges.
"I liked our scoring balance," Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. "After losing our first three games in the tournament, we bounced back, played aggressively and got two wins."
Plainfield South 69, Bartlett 65 (OT) -- At the Naperville Central Tournament, senior forward Krista Matsui led the Cougars to the overtime win. She scored 18 points.
"We controlled the game from start to finish, but allowed Bartlett back into the game," South coach Tor Erickson said. "Krista had an outstanding game."
The game was tied 60-60 at the end of regulation. Bridgette McGuire scored 11 for South, Morgan Williams contributed 9 and Kendall Weber scored 8.
Bolingbrook 57, Bishop Gorman (Nev.) 52 -- At Bolingbrook, senior Miranda Tate's 24 points led the Raiders (2-1) to the victory over the Las Vegas high school. Kia Rhodes chipped in 11 points and made 7-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Plainfield Central 48, Elgin Larkin 41 -- At the Hinsdale South Tournament, senior guard Meghan Merklein had 16 points and 7 rebounds to help lead the Wildcats (3-3). Alyssa Barr scored 11 points and Joslyn Edwards pulled down 8 rebounds. Barr and Sara Kulaga made 4 steals.
Geneva 65, Providence Catholic 46 -- At the Geneva Tournament, Michelle Karr scored 14 points and Katie Hannemann registered 12 points and 5 rebounds for the Celtics (3-2).
Joliet Township 67, Oak Park 61 -- At the Naperville Central Tournament, Tiana Nobles led the Steelmen with 25 points. Marissa Draper scored 13.
JJC faced a 13-point deficit with 6:00 remaining, but shaved the deficit to 4 with a 9-0 run before Danville clinched victory with late free throws.
Shantel Johnson scored 18 for JJC, which held Danville to its lowest offensive production of the season. Danville (4-4) came in averaging 89 points.
Martha Benjamin and Chenae Cooper scored 8 points for the Wolves. JJC trailed 31-30 at halftime and converted just 20-of-62 shots. Danville converted 10-of-11 free throws during the final 2:30.
"Danville is a good team and we need to build from this game," JJC coach Tony Giese said. "We played OK defense, but did make a few mistakes here and there."
JJC made just 2-of-13 3-point shots.
Grand Valley State 54, Lewis 37 -- At Allendale, Mich., the Flyers (1-2) broke to a 12-5 lead early, but fell in the nonconference game. Lewis was led by Lauresha Hawkins' 9 points on 3-pointers. Bolingbrook High School's Lauren Martens finished with 6 points and had a team-high 5 rebounds.
