Lincoln-Way East takes Richards tournament, now 5-0

OAK LAWN -- The Lincoln-Way East High School girls basketball team already is operating on all cylinders.

Led by Kersten Magrum's 20 points and 11 rebounds, the Griffins won the Richards Tournament title on Saturday, beating Evergreen Park 40-32.

Theresa Tynski's 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting powered East (5-0) to a 72-56 semifinal victory over T.F. South. Tynski made 3 3-pointers and Magrum added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Magrum, a 6-foot junior forward, and 5-foot10 senior forward Kela Moss were named to the all-tournament team.

High school highlights
Joliet Township 65, Plainfield South 33 -- At the Naperville Central Tournament, the Steelmen (3-0) built a 27-3 after one quarter and led 43-13 at halftime. Tiana Nobels scored 13 for JT, Mercedes Griffin had 12, Taylor Foulks 11 and Marissa Draper 8. Brittany Reposa's 8 points led Plainfield South.

Neuqua Valley 47, Plainfield Central 39 -- At the Hinsdale South Tournament, Joslyn Edwards had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals for Plainfield Central (1-2). Meghan Merklein scored 12. The Wildcats fell 47-42 to Hinsdale South on Friday. Merklein led with 25 points. Edwards scored 12 and had 11 rebounds. Keyauna Johnson made 5 steals.

Lockport 51, Oswego 41 -- At the Romeoville Tournament, an 18-8 fourth-quarter run made the difference for Lockport (2-1). The Porters led 23-19 at halftime, but Oswego scored 13 third-quarter points to forge a 32-32 tie with 8:00 left to play.

Senior guard Katie Novak 20 points for the Porters, including 9 during the fourth quarter. Ashley Shelby added 9.

Lemont 48, Crete-Monee 32 -- At the Romeoville Tournament, Anna Jozefiak had 11 points and Erin Stahurski also had 11 for the Indians (2-2).

"We played much better today," Lemont coach Bill Bozue said. "We proteceted the ball and kept our turnovers to a minimum. We also made 11-of-16 free throws."

Heritage Christian 49, Bolingbrook 46 -- At Bolingbrook, the Raiders (0-1), which won the 2006 Class AA state championship and placed second last year, opened against the two-time Indiana state champions. Miranda Tate had 12 points and 3 steals for the Raiders. Satavia Taylor finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Wheaton North 53, Providence Catholic 51 -- At the Geneva Tournament, Michelle Karr had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics (1-1). Katie Hannemann finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jamie Revell had 7 points.

Reed-Custer 45, IMSA 28 -- At the IMSA Tournament, Kelsi McMahan led the Comets (1-2) with 9 points and Gabryel Ording scored 8.

"We had only 11 turnovers compared to 21 and 25 our first two games," Reed-Custer coach Matt Peterson said. "Stepanie James played another nice game."

The Comets dropped a 40-39 Friday tournament decision to Aurora Christian. Ording led the way with 10 points and McMahan had 8.

Peotone splits -- At the Beecher Tournament, the Blue Devils (3-1) dropped a 52-39 decision to Illiana Christian before beating Manteno 53-41. In the win, Peotone fought back from a 9-0 deficit to build a 23-21 halftime lead. Stefanie Campbell scored 13 points and Jackie Ryan and JoAnna Ruffino had 10. Against Illiana Christian, Campbell scored 9 and Kelly Bisping had 8.

Olathe Christian 45, Ridgewood Bapist 27 -- At the Northland Invitational, Mary Schaack scored 12 points and Jessica Menard contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds for the Rams (3-1) in the championship game. Menard and Kendra Connor made the all-tournament team. The Rams were 2-1 in the tournament.

Hinckley-Big Rock 50, Seneca 43 -- Amy Gumm led the Irish (1-3) with 16 points. Sammy Turner scored 14.

College highlights
Lewis 58, Michigan Tech 47 -- At the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge, the Flyers (1-1) led 30-22 at half. Bolingbrook's Lauren Martens scored 15 points, including 11 in the first half. She had 6 rebounds. Jenna Mooberry scored 15 points and hauled in 6 boards.

Bethel (Ind.) 81, USF 80 -- At the Rec Center, Paula Scott made a basket and concluded the 3-point play with a free throw with 7.9 seconds remaining to give No. 6-ranked Bethel (5-0) the nonconference win over the Saints (4-2).

Lockport's Brittani Hunter paced USF with 18 points. Providence's Anna Sears scored a career-best 17 points. Jacqie Storm scored 15 and Kristina Yedinak finished with 12. The Saints led 76-66 lead before Bethel rallied.
