Jackson lifts Peotone; JCA soccer wins

From staff reports BRAIDWOOD -- Luke Jackson's big night proved huge dividends for the Peotone High School football team.

Jackson scored two touchdowns and rushed for 261 yards, helping the Blue Devils to a 34-20 win over Reed-Custer late Friday night.

It was the Interstate Eight Conference large school opener for both teams. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Jackson scored on runs of 79 and 15 yards for Peotone (2-2, 1-0).

Reed-Custer (2-2, 0-1) owned a 14-7 lead. With 50 seconds left in the first quarter, junior quarterback Casey Barnes broke an 11-yard touchdown run. In the third quarter, the Comets scored again on a 58-yard pass from Barnes to Tim Vanduyne.

Jackson's two scores, with a 12-yard pass from Nick Romanchik to Anthony Falaschetti, put the Blue Devils (up 28-14.

Sophomore Jim Benson's 1-yard TD run narrowed the Peotone lead to 28-20. But Tony Salerno's touchdown run late in the fourth quarter sealed Peotone's victory.

Peotone outgained Reed-Custer 384-231. Romanchik completed 8-of-14 passes for 149 yards.

High school soccer

Plainfield North 3, Kaneland 0 -- Nick Bartalone scored 2 goals for the Tigers. Limber Osorio had a goal. Damien Silva and Jamie Arambula had assists. North goalkeeper James Wagner recorded the shutout, making 6 saves.

Eisenhower 2, Lincoln-Way East 1 -- At the Pepsi Showdown, Jared Rohlfs scored a goal for the Griffins (2-8-2). Robbie McGowan had the assist.

Oak Park-River Forest 3, Plainfield Central 2 -- At the Pepsi Showdown in LaGrange, Louie Vasquez and Tyler Mitchell scored goals for Plainfield Central (6-3, 3-0).

Libertyville 2, Providence Catholic 1 -- At the Pepsi Showdown, Libertyville scored twice inthe second half to overtake an early Providence lead. Paco Battistini scored the Celtics' goal off an assist from Ian Land. Alec Pickett had 4 saves in goal for Providence (4-6-2).

JCA 5, Niles Notre Dame 1 -- At Joliet, Jon Pullara scored 3 goals to lead the Hilltoppers to the East Suburban Catholic Conference win. Christian Chavez and Alex Pullara scored JCA's other goals. Chavez and Antonio Alvarez had 2 assists apiece.

Plainfield South 2, Joliet Township 1 -- At Plainfield, the Cougars (3-9, 1-3) earned their first-ever win over JT with the win. David Miller and Ben Kuester scored goals for South off assists from Matt Philibin and Nick Skrip.

Women's soccer

USF loses -- At La Crosse, Wis., Viterbo (Wis.) scored three first-half goals and blanked the Saints (2-4). USF managed just 3 shots on goal.

JJC ties -- At Joliet on Friday, the Wolves (2-1-2, 2-1) battled to a 1-1 tie with Waubonsee CC. Tiffany Calderon scored JJC's lone goal 22 minutes into the first half.

Men's soccer

Viterbo 6, USF 2 -- Host Viterbo (Wis.) broke open a close game with three goals in the final 10 minutes to pull away from the Saints (0-3-1). Senior Doug Diak and freshman Luis Escorza scored unassisted goals. For Escorza, a product of Plainfield Central, it was his first collegiate goal.

High school girls golf

19th annual Providence Celtic Swing -- At Broken Arrow Golf Club, Lockport placed second and host Providence Catholic fifth in the 26-team field.

The teams were split evenly with 13 teams in both the silver and gold divisions. Lincoln-Way East was the lone area team in the gold group and placed in a tie for fourth with a team score of 354. Lockport (383) finshed seven strokes behind silver champ Wheaton North. Providence (400) was fifth and Lincoln-Way Central (414) tied for seventh. Lemont finished ninth (430), with Joliet Township (432) in 10th and Minooka (460) in 12th.
