Plainfield North hangs tough in loss
WHEATON -- Wheaton North High School scored twice in the final 5:05 to hand Plainfield North a 42-28 defeat in nonconference action Friday.
Wheaton North junior running back Mike Trumpy scored three touchdowns, on runs of 13, 65 and 2 yards. He had 26 carries for 211 yards.
Plainfield North sophomore quarterback Brice Corrigan went 16 of 29 for 152 passing yards, with three interceptions.
Wheaton North ended the game with 444 total yards of offense, compared with Plainfield North's 210 total yards.
"We hung with them," said Plainfield North coach Tim Kane. "They are a solid team. Our kids came out in the second half and played much better, and with more passion. We just can't give up that many yards. Our defense didn't play as well as we did last week (in a 28-12 win over Joliet Township)."
"They certainly have great size and speed on both sides of the ball, and it was a great test for us," Kane said of Wheaton North.
In the third quarter, Plainfield North's Jake Arnold scored on a 10-yard run, bringing the score to 27-21. However, Wheaton North shot right back: Jack DeAno ran the kick back 92 yards to build Wheaton North's lead to 33-21.
Early in the fourth quarter, Plainfield North scored a touchdown on quarterback Andrew Starks' 2-yard run. The conversion kick trimmed the Falcons' lead to 33-28.
On Wheaton North's next possession, the Falcons put together a 13-play drive that ended with Corey Thonn kicking a 27-yard field goal, with 4:46 to play in the game.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, an interception on the first play from scrimmage following the field goal put the ball back in the Falcons' hands. A pass by Corrigan was tipped and intercepted, giving Wheaton North the ball at the Plainfield North 42 yard line.
Three consecutive running plays by Trumpy produced Wheaton North's final touchdown.
Wheaton North racked up nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half with almost half of that total coming on two quick scoring drives in the final 2:48.
The two teams traded a pair of touchdowns apiece up to that point and were tied at 14-14. But instead of going to the locker room with a tie, Plainfield North found itself in a two-touchdown hole.
Trumpy scored his second rushing touchdown of the half with a 65-yard run for the first of the two late scores.
The Falcons got the ball right back with 1:19 left on an interception at midfield. Three plays later, quarterback Eric Terrazas connected with Corey Thonn for the pair's second touchdown of the half and Wheaton North found itself up by two scores at the intermission.
