Lemont claims superlight, varsity titles
LEMONT -- It was a good day for the home team Sunday in the River Valley Conference Youth Football League Super Bowls.
The Lemont Hornets won two of the four games, taking the superlight championship 18-12 over the Joliet Raiders and the varsity title 12-6 over Frankfort Blue.
In the lightweight game, Frankfort Blue beat Bourbonnais Red 18-6 and, on the junior varsity level, Bourbonnais Black downed the Morris Warriors 14-6.
In the semifinals last week, the Hornets superlights beat the New Lenox Junior Knights 18-12 and the Raiders blanked Frankfort Blue 12-0. In lightweight play, Bourbonnais Red beat Ottawa 7-6 and Frankfort Blue beat the Lemont Hornets 13-6. In JV action, Bourbonnais Black beat Lemont 22-14 and Morris upended Frankfort Blue 28-6. In the varsity semis, Lemont beat Frankfort Black 26-16 and Frankfort Blue beat the New Lenox Junior Warriors 14-6.
In the C League, Convicts capped the first undefeated season in the league's five-year history with a 14-7 win over Irving Street Irish Bulldogs to win their fourth straight title. Ian Johnson scored on a 50-yard punt return with 2:00 left to seal the win. In the semis, Convicts beat Bomb Squad 33-14 as Justin Clarke threw 4 TDs to Tony Soporno and Matt Ball had 5 sacks. Bomb Squad's Ivan Prater returned a punt 90 yards for a score. The Bulldogs beat GoodFellas 24-18 in six overtimes, with William Bills scoring the winning TD on a 10-yard run.
In the D League, JK Style won the title 18-0 over Inferno as Jeremy Krieger ran for 2 TDs and caught an 85-yard TD pass from Brad Bourg. In the semis, Inferno beat Let's Activate 8-2 as Steven Howard ran 60 yards for a TD with 3:00 left. JK Style edged Clayton's Tap 8-7 when Bourg threw a 35-yard TD to Justin Hern with 45 seconds left. Dakota Sheetz returned an interception 40 yards for the Clayton's score.
Lewis, which has now won eight straight, improves to 13-3-1 overall and will square off with No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky in the GLVC semifinals, hosted by Drury, on Friday at 5 p.m.
Hernandez posted his career-high 12th goal of the season with 85 seconds left in the opening half, as he cleaned up a pass from Nathan Groesch at the 43:35 mark.
Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal stopped 2 shots to claim his 10th shutout of the season. Holy Cross (Ind.) 4, USF 0 -- At Joliet, Holy Cross scored 4 first-half goals --three of them in the first 15 minutes -- and never let St. Francis back into the game.The visiting Saints ended USF's men's soccer season as the loss eliminated USF (6-10-2, 3-6-1) from contention for the final spot in the CCAC postseason tournament.
