Bibbs breaks loose as Plainfield North rolls
JOLIET -- Kapri Bibbs scored 5 touchdowns as Plainfield North High School defeated District 202 rival Plainfield South 39-13 in a key Southwest Prairie Conference match-up Friday night, a win that clinched the first-ever playoff berth for the Tigers with their sixth win
Plainfield South opened the scoring as junior speedster Dondre Adams broke free on a 40 yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Cougars (4-4, 2-4) a 7-0 lead.
While that gave the homecoming crowd on Senior Night at South something to cheer about, the Tigers offense began to pick up momentum.
After the teams exchanged punts following Adams' touchdown, quarterback Bryce Corrigan showcased his arm and his running ability on the Tigers first touchdown drive of the game,
Corrigan completed 2-of-2 passes for 22 yards and also picked up 17 yards on a play that advanced the ball to the Cougars four yard line.
From there, Bibbs tallied the first of his five touchdowns.
In a game where field position played an important role throughout the first quarter, North (6-2, 4-2) got a break when Cody Lopez then recovered a Cougar fumble after sophomore quarterback Austin Horwarth had completed a 9 yard pass to Jeff Kohl.
The key play in the 7-play scoring drive that followed proved to be a 41 yard pass completion from Corrigan to Devonta Davis. The 6-2 180 pound senior made a highlight reel catch of Corrigan's pass, snatching what looked like it might be an interception from a Cougar defender at the 5 yard line.
Bibbs, who carried the ball 34 times for 217 yards on the game, followed with his second score of the night.
"Davis's catch was a huge momentum shift," Plainfield North coach Tim Kane said after the game. "It was nice to finally be able to spread things out a little on offense and to throw the ball."
Corrigan showcased his arm, completing 12 of 20 passes for 176 yards with no interceptions. He also had 2 carries for 32 yards in the first half, to compliment the running of Bibbs.
"Kapri has done it all year long; he runs into people and then he runs over people," said Kane.
Senior Chris Whitehead hauled in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Corrigan early in the third quarter to increase the Tigers' lead to 19-7.
Later on in the period, Howarth connected with Alexander Flores on a 62 yard touchdown pass that trimmed the Tigers' lead to 19-13.
Bibbs then took over in the fourth quarter, as North reeled off 20 unanswered points. Bibbs added touchdown runs of 37, 55, and 11 yards to the two he had already scored.
"Plainfield South has a nice ball club that certainly has a lot of weapons," Kane said. "I am certainly proud of how we responded after they took that early lead on us right away."
