Plainfield North tops Morris in SPC

MORRIS -- The Plainfield North High School girls basketball team had no offensive rebounds and did not attempt a 3-point shot during Tuesday's game against Morris.

Nonetheless, the Tigers posted a 48-38 win over the Redskins in Southwest Prairie Conference play.

North shot very well, making 19-of-31 for a 61.3 percent showing.

Junior Kendra Lumpkin led North (12-3, 6-1) with 18 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Takeya Green finished with 12 points and 4 boards for the Tigers, who led 15-7 after one quarter.

But a big second-quarter effort by Morris (7-6, 2-3) helped the Redskins to a 20-19 halftime lead.

However, junior Kayleigh Blaney hit two key baskets in the third quarter to help North to a 32-25 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Melanie Stevens scored 11 points for Morris. Hali Steffes contributed 10.


Lincoln-Way North 52, Crete-Monee 46 -- At Frankfort, Erynn Schuh had 22 points to lead North to the nonconference victory. Sam Nekola had 10 points and Mary McNeil grabbed 10 rebounds.

Lemont 48, Downers Grove North 42 -- At Downers Grove, Lemont (12-3) posted the nonconference victory as Alex Prasauskas led the way with 15 points. Annie Forzley added 9 while Natalija Vaznelis and Erin Stahurski scored 8.

Plainfield South 44, Romeoville 38 -- At Joliet, South (2-13, 1-5) was led by Bridgette McGuire's 18 points in the Southwest Prairie win. Paige Stankus scored 13.

Oswego 45, Minooka 41 -- At Minooka, Oswego went on an 18-1 run in the second half to post the Southwest Prairie Conference win over the Indians (9-5, 6-1). Minooka owned a 26-16 lead in the third quarter before the Panthers went on their run.

"Oswego is the type of team that can run off unanswered points in a hurry," Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. "So if you don't take care of the basketball, they can make some runs against you.

"This was a tough loss, but we need to bounce back to play a very good Oswego East team on Friday."

Stephanie Furr scored 13 points for the Indians. Morgan Novak finished with 11.

Reed-Custer 52, Grant Park 30 -- At Braidwood, Jacklyn Strouse had 10 points and 10 rebounds to pace Reed-Custer (8-7) to the nonconference win. Katie Kochan added 9 points while Kelsi McMahan had 8 rebounds and Stef James 7. James finished with 4 assists and 3 steals.

"We played well considering it was our first game since Christmas," Reed-Custer coach Matt Peterson said. "We came out strong and hit some 3-pointers early to get us going.

Ottawa Marquette 64, Gardner-South Wilmington 47 -- At Ottawa, Rachel Mack led Gardner-South Wilmington (10-9) with 21 points in the nonconference loss. Kelsey Lutz had 16.
