Seneca takes Plano title
PLANO -- Seth Evans and the Seneca High School boys basketball team continued to rule the Plano Holiday Tournament.
The 6-foot Evans, a senior guard who is committed to Wisconsin-Green Bay, had another stellar game as the Irish beat Putnam County 47-40 in the tournament finals.
Evans had 25 points, 4 steals and 4 assists. He captured the tourney MVP award for a third consecutive year, helping the Irish (11-0) to a fourth Plano championship in the last five years.
"This was a good win," Seneca coach Doug Evans said. "We became the first team in tournament history here to win the championship four times in five years. That's quite an accomplishment."
Senior forward Andy Supergan was a nice complement for Evans. The 6-6 Supergan contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds for the Irish.
"This was a total team effort," Doug Evans said. "Winning the tournament with four nice wins is a nice way to end the first portion of our season."
Seneca won the Class A state championship in 2006 after finishing third the year before.
Jason Karstens led Dwight (8-2) with 19 points, while sophomore Jens Kennedy, who was named all-tournament, scored 8.
Chris Irvin led GSW with 12 points.
"The kids did a rel nice job defensively," Dwight coach Mark Porter said. "We also came out of our shooting funk a little bit."
Ottawa Marquette 54, Coal City 52 -- At Plano, Jack Dillon and Mark Evans each scored 13 points for Coal City (1-12).
"We had our best effort of the tournament," Coal City coach Chris Spencer said. "We came up just short in the end.
"We battled back and tied the game at 51 with 23 seconds left, but they made a basket, were fouled and made the free throw. We came down, shot a three, got fouled and made 1-of-3 free throws."
A tough first half did in Coal City, which trailed 17-2 after one quarter and 32-9 at halftime. The margin increased to 44-15 after three quarters.
"We got beat in every facet of the game," Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. "But we beat some good teams to make the championship game.
"Hopefully we can finish the second half of the season strong."
