Lockport golfers rule in 'Tour' event

LOCKPORT -- Lockport High School's Steve Wasilewski and Porter grad Veronica Bernier were winners Monday in the Midwest College Golf Tour at Broken Arrow.

Bernier, who attends Eastern Illinois University, won the women's division with a 1-over-par 73. She shot 1-under 35 on the back nine.

Wasilewski won the men's crown with a score of 6-over 78. Brian Komp, a golfer at the University of St. Francis, was second with 82.

Finishing behind Bernier in the women's division was Loyola University's Nikki Miller with 75. Lockport's Carly Shapiro was third at 82, USF's Vicky McGowan from Lincoln-Way East took fourth (83) and Providence Catholic's Sheila Connolly of Lewis University was fifth (85).

The tour continues Monday at Bonny Brook in Waukegan. Broken Arrow will host competition on July 21.

Golf

Senior Tour Event -- At Wedgewood, the Joliet Park District wrapped up its 8th Senior Tour event in a best 2-of-4 net ball format.

Taking first was the foursome of Tom Oberts, John Dolak, Dan Hischier and John Papp at 30-under-par.

Six strokes back in a tie for second was Jim Davidson, Jerry Mulcahy, Larry Sukley and Ardee Humbert. The foursome was matched by Chip Tarmes, Rick Flynn, Les Arling and Bob O'Reilly.

The circuit's next event will be a 4-man Stableford competition on July 15 at Wedgewood.

Olson cards ace -- At Dwight Country Club, Dwight's Harlan Olson aced the par-4, 306-yard first hole.

Moran scores hole-in-one -- Joliet's Rocky Moran aced the 175-yard, par-3 12th hole. He used a 4-iron. Bill Crossen and Jerry Frankovich witnessed the feat.

Baseball

St. Joe's in Cooperstown Dreams Park Tournament -- At Cooperstown, N.Y., the St. Joe's 12-year-olds rebounded from a 14-1 loss to a powerhouse from North Carolina to beat a New Jersey team 18-4 in its two games played Tuesday.

Zach Speaker homered for the only run against North Carolina. It was the only run North Carolina allowed in the tournament to date.

Against New Jersey, Adrian Castillo was 3-for-4 with a home run. J.B. Butler went 2-for-3 and homered, and Alex Perez also homered. Anthony DiNardo, Drake DeBenedetti, Dillon Mattea and Speaker had 2 hits. Mattea and Speaker combined to pitch the victory.

In Monday's first game, Arkansas beat St. Joe's 12-3. DiNardo homered for St. Joe's while Brett Cates, Perez and Castillo had hits.

St. Joe's then fell to Florida 17-14 in 8 innings. Castillo had 3 hits, including 2 homers, 1 a grand slam, and 5 RBIs. Perez homered, doubled and drove in 5 runs. DiNardo homered, Zack Thomas doubled and Butler had 2 hits. Zach Speaker, Cates and Dyllan Mattea all had hits for St. Joe's, which fought back from a 9-0 deficit to force extra innings.

DiNardo, Drake DeBenedetti, Speaker and Perez pitched in the Florida game for St. Joe's, which is 3-3 in the tournament entering today's action.

Lincoln-Way North 11, Homewood-Flossmoor 7 -- A.J. Neufeld was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs for North (10-3). Alex Rivera added 3 hits (double). Eric Wilson picked up his fourth victory.

Soccer

Joliet Township 2, Lincoln-Way East 0 -- At Frankfort, Eduardo Arcos scored twice for the Steelmen (5-1-1). Gabriel Lozano made 4 saves for the shutout.

Basketball

Back in the Day 2 -- Twenty former players from two decades of Bolingbrook and Romeoville high school basketball will square off in a second-ever reunion rivalry match on Saturday, July 19.

Leading squads comprised of former players from the 1980s and '90s will be former Raider coach Bob Mitchell and former Spartan coach Jack Hermanski.

The first reunion match took place in 2003 and featured only players from the '80s.

The contest begins at 1 p.m. at Bolingbrook.
