Lions Club Halloween Costume Contest

Lions Club Halloween Costume Contest

The Morris Lions Club will once again be hosting the annual Halloween Costume Contest on the lawn in front of the Grundy County Courthouse at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Parents are encouraged to bring children in costumes to the courthouse lawn before the judging at 4:30. Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: ages 0-2, ages 3-4, ages 5-6, ages 7-8, ages 9-10, ages 11-12, and ages 13 and up. Adults are encouraged to come in costume as well, to be judged in the 13 and up category.

Following the announcement of the winners, treats will be provided by the Morris Lions. The downtown merchants will be offering treats as well for costumed Halloween participants, starting at 5 p.m., after the Halloween Costume Contest concludes, until 7 p.m. Families are encouraged to join in the festivities, which provide a safe and fun way to start the Halloween celebration.

Fall Tablescape Fundraiser

The Morris Hospital Auxiliary will host a Fall Tablescape Fundraiser at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Quality Inn, formerly Holiday Inn, in Morris. Entrepreneur Seattle Sutton will speak after dinner.

Tablescapes, or table decorations, set the tone, theme and style for whatever the occasion may be and include the centerpiece, linens, dishes, napkin rings and lighting. Businesses, individuals and organizations are invited to create beautifully appointed tables for eight.

The decorated tables will be open for viewing at 6 p.m. Guests will be seated at the decorated tables at 7 p.m. for dinner. The event provides a wonderful opportunity to get table decorating ideas.

Four professionally decorated tables, set for viewing only, will be raffled. Proceeds will benefit continued excellence in local health care.

The guest speaker, Seattle Sutton, is founder of Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating, a family owned healthy meal replacement company with headquarters in Ottawa. Sutton, a resident of Marseilles, founded the company in 1985 to help people improve their diets.

Dinner reservations for the Auxiliary's Fall Tablescapes Fundraiser are $25 per person. There is no additional fee to decorate a table.

To make your reservation for dinner, or to reserve a table to create your own Tablescape, please e-mail Jane Tesdall, manager of the Morris Hospital Auxiliary, at jtesdall@morrishospital.org, or call the Auxiliary office at 815-942-2932, ext. 7021.

State Supreme Court Justice to speak at Rotary meeting

Unless a person is directly affected by the judicial system, many forget its importance so the Morris Rotary Club is bringing in a speaker to remind people of the significance of the state court system.

Justice Thomas Kilbride of the Illinois Supreme Court Third Judicial District will be discussing the Judicial Education Program with the Morris Rotary Club and its guests during the club's Visitors' Day this week.

The speaker will present during Rotary's regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chapin's Restaurant, 701 N. Liberty St. in Morris. This program is compliments of the Morris Rotary Club and pre-registration is required.

Kilbride is the second speaker brought in by Rotary as part of its new Visitors' Day program to attract new Rotarians.

"Our first Visitors' Day in August was overwhelmingly successful. We're looking forward to bringing in more informative speakers reaching a multitude of careers and opportunities," Mitchell said.

Kilbride will do a presentation on the process of the state court system and on concerning statistics on how elementary and high school curriculum seems to concentrate on state government less and less. This trend is having alarming affects on today's adults, according to Kilbride's Judicial Education Program brochure.

"We think this will be an enlightening experience with information that hopefully the audience can put forth in their lives," Mitchell said.

The Morris Rotary Club was founded in 1915 and currently has about 25 members. Rotary clubs are volunteer service organizations dedicated to giving back to their communities and other communities around the world by volunteering their time and fundraising.

The Morris Rotary is always open to new members.

To register for the speaker program please call Rotarian Matt Dennison at (630) 553-7921, email at mdennison@oldsecond.com or visit www.morrisrotary.org.
