Schools fighting flu

October 30, 2009

MINOOKA -- Minooka Grade School District is taking all possible precautions to minimize the spread of H1N1 and other flu viruses in its schools, Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said.

Gegenheimer has had discussions with and researched information from the medical community, including local doctors, district nurses, the Center for Disease Control and other sources, he said.

There have been at least two confirmed cases of children with the H1N1 virus at Minooka Intermediate School and one at Walnut Trails.

"They are telling us that a high percentage of those diagnosed with type A flu virus probably had H1N1," Gegenheimer said.

Each of the district's six buildings have every surface sterilized and the buses are sterilized twice a day -- once each before the morning commute and the afternoon commute.

Teachers are doing a great job reminding students to wash their hands and cover coughs and with reminding parents to keep sick children home, Gegenheimer said.

"We have been attempting to be proactive," Gegenheimer said. "We are trying to make every effort possible to keep our schools safe, clean and open."
