Local liquor store robbed
JOLIET TOWNSHIP -- Armed men held up a liquor store Wednesday night.
Will County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies were called around 11:30 p.m. after the three men threatened two employees at Ingalls Park Food and Liquor, 1822 E. Washington St.
"Three black men wearing black hooded sweat shirts, blue jeans and ski masks came in, two of them carrying semi-automatic handguns," she said.
One of the robbers forced the cashier to give him the money from the registers and punched him in the face. The trio also took a bottle of gin that was sitting on the counter and fled.
Will County Sheriff's police said the 44-year-old victim was sleeping in his car in front of the River Restaurant, 24001 W. Lorenzo Road, when the suspect broke the window with a hammer.
The 36-year-old man allegedly stabbed the victim in the arm and shin before leaving the scene. The victim was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Detectives were working Thursday afternoon to locate and question the alleged assailant, police said.
State police Master Sgt. Thomas Evoy said the UPS semi was carrying a double trailer when the crash occurred at 3:11 a.m. at milepost 141 near Interstate 355.
"The truck drove off the road and rolled over onto its side, spilling out nonhazardous freight," he said. The driver reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to Silver Cross Hospital.
Drivers were backed up for miles as crews worked to move the boxes and trailers from the roadway. At 10 a.m., eastbound traffic remained solid back to Richards Street, while gapers' delay slowed westbound drivers to LaGrange Road. All lanes had been reopened by 12:30, Evoy said.
"It does not appear alcohol was a factor in this crash," he said. "No citations have been issued, but the investigation is still ongoing."
ComEd has reported that between Oct. 13 and 20, someone used a shotgun to destroy two transformers on Woods Road north of Hansen Road. In an apparently unrelated incident, over the weekend someone damaged the water payment drop box outside the Diamond Village Hall.
