More testify as Peterson grand jury wraps up

May 14, 2009

JOLIET — Friends and foes of accused wife-murderer Drew Peterson appeared before the grand jury Thursday, one week before its 18-month term is set to expire.

Peterson's stepbrother, Thomas Morphey, who claims to have helped Peterson carry a barrel containing the body of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, testified for the first time.

Morphey was in the company of Paula Stark and Len Wawczak, the couple who secretly taped their conversations with Peterson at the behest of the state police. All three entered and left the building where the special grand jury convenes together.

Stark and Wawczak also were testifying for the first time. A source said testimony from Morphey, Stark and Wawczak would signal the conclusion of the case and indicate an indictment against Peterson for the murder of Stacy was forthcoming.

All three declined to comment to media waiting outside.

Besides Morphey, Stark and Wawczak, Peterson's friend Steve Carcerano, who found Peterson's slain third wife, Kathleen Savio, slumped over in her bathtub in March 2004, testified Thursday. Carcerano has been before the grand jury before, and was summoned as far back as the autumn of 2007, shortly after Stacy disappeared.

Another friend of Peterson's, Mike Robinson, testified as well, sources said. One source said Robinson appeared "hostile" when he went before the grand jury.

The grand jury has already indicted Peterson on a pair of first-degree murder charges in connection with Savio's death but is still reviewing evidence in connection with Stacy's disappearance.

The state police believe Stacy may have been killed and list Peterson as their sole suspect in the case.

Peterson is being held at the county jail. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning and his attorneys are attempting to convince a judge to reduce his $20 million bond.

While the law has managed to get Peterson locked up, they apparently are unable to get him to shut up. Friday morning's "Today" show reportedly will feature a telephone interview with the jailed Peterson.
