Column shows prejudices

George Gaspar's column assumes that people that Gaspar doesn't even know are prejudiced. At the same time, he shows prejudice against certain groups of people in his writings. In speaking of a person's faults, please remember your own. Remember those with homes of glass should never throw a stone.

Keep women off a beat

I'm responding to the letter to the editor "Proud of female officer." I, too, am proud of any female that is in a position dominated by men. Female police officers have great communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to stay calm. The only thing I'm concerned with is that a female physically does not have the strength that a male has to do the dangerous jobs. But I am proud of our female officers. They just should not be put on a beat.

Jefferson's social programs

Elected Republicans said they were against President Obama's stimulus because six programs smell like socialism. They were right. Five of the programs were written by Thomas Jefferson. The sixth was written by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s.

Wages must equal costs

We are constantly being told that the reason jobs go to other countries is because the labor force in the United States wants way too much money. People in many countries work for $2 an hour. The reason we can't work for that wage is because houses don't sell for $13,000, rent isn't $50 a month, bread isn't 25 cents a loaf, and gasoline isn't 39 cents a gallon.

Gang cycle hard to stop

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he wouldn't point a finger of blame at anyone for the gang violence in Chicago and in the Chicago schools. He's wrong. The blame rests with the parents and the families of offenders. They must take responsibility for the lack of respect for life that these young people have toward their fellow man. These gang-bangers were raised without any structure or discipline. They're now raising their children in the same environment. This cycle will be hard to stop.
