Only elections count

Lori Sherman's Oct. 14 column was very interesting. She seems to think that the years between 2000 and 2008 were somehow a high water mark for free speech and that this great country is now delving into the depths of Nazism.

It would seem that we now debate politics by labeling our opponents and those who would dare to disagree with us politically as something despicable.

Sherman is also upset that the government "is making plans to take over health care."

Some of us are worried that the government won't go far enough with health care reform because if you hadn't noticed, it's pretty messed up. For those who are worried that this country is somehow being now taken away from its people by those currently in power, please keep the following in mind -- when you get down to it, the only thing that really counts for anything in politics are elections.

Elections are the ultimate town hall meetings because what you do in them actually counts for something.

Apparently many people do not agree with Sherman's political views, and those people made that stand abundantly clear when they cast their votes in the last national election.

Believe it or not, there are some of us who think that the country is better off now than it was before the November 2008 elections, but ultimately only time will tell if that is true.

Make no mistake about it -- those not on Lori Sherman's "side of the aisle," as she put it, love their country just as much as she does.

At any rate, the next election will be here before you know it, and Sherman will get her chance to, as she says, "to throw off such government."
