CN crossing upgrade done at Frankfort-Mokena line

November 15, 2009

FRANKFORT -- Improvements to the Canadian National Railway crossing on 116th Avenue have been completed ahead of schedule.

The $156,000 project on the border of Mokena and Frankfort included widening the road, replacing the track bed, adding gates with a nonmountable median to prevent vehicles from driving around the gates and adding recreational trails and sidewalks that have gates.

Frankfort contributed $63,000 toward the project.

Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland said there will be more safety improvements at railroad crossings as the village works toward establishing a quiet zone in which trains will not have to sound their horns while passing through.
