5 treated after College of DuPage gas leak

November 10, 2009

A College of DuPage building was evacuated and five people at a neighboring building were treated for feeling ill after a landscaping crew struck a gas line outside the buildings Monday morning.

At 11:34 a.m., the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call of a possible natural gas line leak at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn, according to a release from the department.

When fire crews got to the scene they found that a landscaping crew had struck a 2-inch service line to the new Technology Building. That building was evacuated and remained so throughout the afternoon.

Nicor crews responded to the scene and were working on securing the gas line, the release said.

The rest of the campus remained open and operating normally. Five people who were in an adjacent building reported feeling ill and were treated at the scene by paramedics.

There were no reported injuries other than the five who were feeling ill, the release said.
