Police blotter: Mad dash from gunman
JOLIET -- A local man fled for his life when a bandit dressed all in black brandished a pistol and demanded his money Saturday night.
The 50-year-old man told police he was walking home from work about 7:45 p.m. when he was accosted on McRoberts Street near Cass Street.
A 5-foot-10, 140-pound black man in his 20s, clad entirely in black and with braided hair pointed his gun at the ground and asked his prey, "What you got in your pockets?" according to a police report.
But the victim of this would-be robber ran off and made it to his home.
The man later told police that he believes he would have been shot if he had not made his desperate dash to safety.
The man reportedly was smoking in the park near Jefferson Street when a pack of eight men accosted and beat him about 7 p.m. The gang stole the injured man's cell phone and wallet, which contained $45, then harried him as he struggled to escape.
The mob followed the man as he crossed the river and proceeded down Jefferson Street, finally abandoning him near the courthouse.
Residents later found the man immobile on the porch of their East Washington Street home and called the police.
The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital.
