Man dies after a stint in jail

JOLIET -- A Gurnee man died Monday after spending five days incarcerated at the county jail.

Frank Wormley, 51, was pronounced dead at Silver Cross Hospital where he was taken after being treated by paramedics and correctional officers.

"He'd been in the medical unit," Will County Sheriff's spokesman Pat Barry said. "It appears he had many medical problems and (died as the result of) a heart condition."

Wormley arrived at the hospital just hours after he'd been scheduled to appear in court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2004. He'd been arrested Oct. 28 for an outstanding warrant and was being held on a $10,000 bond.

After learning of Wormely's death, a relative contacted The Herald-News with concerns about how he died while in custody.

Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Bob Brenczewski said an autopsy had been performed and showed no initial signs of foul play or anything suspicious.

"(Determining) the cause of death will be pending until we get back toxicology and other test results," he said.
