Joliet casino parking lot shocker

November 5, 2009

JOLIET -- One woman might be shocked to learn the county jail is also handicap accessible.

Police say around noon Oct. 29, two vehicles were arriving in the parking lot of the Empress Casino when one of them took the last available handicapped parking space.

The driver of a maroon Chevrolet Impala who had lost out on the spot began yelling obscenities at the other driver, a 63-year-old woman, and her 44-year-old daughter saying they "had taken her space."

"The suspect then leaned out the window of the Impala and used a stun gun to shock the (younger woman) in her upper left arm," Deputy Chief Mike Trafton said.

The woman in the Impala drove away from the casino and the victim refused medical treatment. Trafton said security cameras recorded the incident and have led investigators to identify the suspect.

Drinking and parking don't mix
CHANNAHON -- And Joliet police weren't the only ones watching handicapped parking spaces.

Around 10:33 p.m. Oct. 24, an officer on patrol drove past the Amoco Gas Station on Route 6 near Interstate 55.

"He saw Brandon P. Burnett park in a handicapped space and walk out of the car with no obvious disability," Deputy Chief Jeff Wold said. The officer then reportedly checked but did not see any special placard or license plates on Burnett's vehicle and pulled him over as he left the crowded parking lot.

"The officer approached and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver," Wold said.

In addition to being charged with the parking violation, Burnett, 22, of Joliet, was also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and released on bond.
