Martins preaching a family affair
JOLIET — They have been called as men of God, says the Rev. Edward Martin, 54, and his sons, Wendell, 20, and Rodney, 25. Edward, who is pastor at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, has five sons, but did not expect any of them to choose the ministry. Rodney said watching his father caused him to say he did not want to be a minister when he grew up. "We saw my dad seven days a week," Wendell added. "We heard the phone calls at 3 a.m. from people who needed prayer."

JOLIET — Behind every dark cloud is a silver lining, as the saying goes, but when George L. Tyus III was laid off from his job at Sears in 1958, he had no idea that it would lead him to become a trailblazer in the insurance world. "There were no jobs per se and I met this good friend of mine named Charles Hudson. He asked me what was I doing, and I said, 'I'm looking for a job,'" said Tyus. When Hudson asked him if he was interested in prospecting, Tyus responded, "What's prospecting?"

JOLIET — Shirley Taylor never expected her little girl to grow up and become a teacher like her. But Taylor, who has taught in the Joliet grade school district for 31 years, was joined by her daughter Jaculine this fall at Dirksen. While it's certainly unusual to have a mother and daughter teach at the same school — Shirley can't think of another example — the story goes deeper than this. That's because Shirley is a pioneer — one of the first 20 or so black teachers in the Joliet Grade School system.

JOLIET — Many schoolchildren don't think twice about sitting next to someone whose skin color differs from their own. But 50 years ago — when many of their grandparents were students — it was uncommon for a white child to attend school with a black child. Racial segregation was the norm across America, with "separate but equal" schools.

JOLIET — The 6-foot-2 teen-ager's feet seem to magically rise off the floor as he thrusts the basketball through the air and it sinks into the basket without touching the rim. "Good shot," yells his father, who is standing in the middle of the gym floor at the Joliet Park District. "That's what I'm talking about!"
