Plan of Chicago
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Plan of Chicago, created by architects Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett and presented to the city of Chicago on July 4, 1909.

Joliet is the beneficiary of several Burnham-designed buildings, namely the Joliet Public Library, which opened nearly 106 years ago on Dec. 14 1903. The main library building at 150 N. Ottawa St., is an example of Burnham's talents.

Other Joliet buildings include the Renaissance Center, the YMCA and the Bays Professional Building.

Joliet Public Library will host a program to honor Burnham at 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at the library's Black Road branch, 3395 Black Road. David G. Clark, who has written books on Route 66, will present, "No Little Plans: The Roads of Daniel Burnham's Plan of Chicago and Historic Route 66: A Journey through History."

The Newberry Library and the Burnham Plan Centennial Committee have created an exhibit named "Make Big Plans: Burnham's Vision of an American Metropolis." Joliet Public Library is one of several public agencies that has the exhibit on display and is available for viewing at the main library through December.

For more information, contact the library's outreach services coordinator, Kim Neidermyer at 815-846-3124.

Benefit for hot line
"Eter 8 Nity" will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Proceeds benefit the Upper Room crisis hot line, a 24-hour service for Roman Catholic priests and religious men of the Catholic church who need counseling, information and referral, suicide prevention/crisis intervention, and reassurance calls. The phones are staffed by trained volunteers under the supervision of Sister Mary Fran Seeley.

"Eter 8 Nity" is a group of priests in the Diocese of Joliet gathered by the Rev. Mark A. Fracaro, pastor of St. Mary Church in Minooka.

Tickets can be reserved by contacting the hot line office at 815-727-4367.

Care for troops
Cantigny VFW Post No. 367 is sponsoring a spaghetti-dinner fundraiser to benefit Operation Care Package for Christmas package mailings.

The dinner will be Nov. 18 at Cantigny VFW Post No. 367 on Horseshoe Drive in Joliet. Food will be served between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased at the post or by calling Ted Parks at 815-274-3828 or Debbie Smothers at 815-723-6960.
