Scholarships
Illinois high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to compete for scholarships in Illinois Dollars for Scholars' fifth annual Lincolnland Legends Essay Contest.
Up to 19 finalists will be selected from among entries received (one from each congressional district). The winning essay writer from each district will earn a $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year for four years).
The top two essays from the finalist group will earn either $12,000 for first place or $8,000 for second place.
The Lincolnland Legends program provides a means to recognize outstanding Illinoisans who are role models and inspirational figures for youths. Students will write about current or former Illinois residents who are still living and have made significant contributions to society. Each of the 19 Illinoisans who is selected for the title of Lincolnland Legend will, in addition to being honored at a ceremony next spring, have the opportunity to award a $500 scholarship in his or her own name to the Illinois high school of their choice.
Contest information is also available online at www.illinoisdollarsforscholars.org. All essays must be received by Dec. 1.
The celebration honoring the Lincolnland Legends will be April 10 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Tickets also will be available to the public.
Nicor Gas is this year's title sponsor. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For information on sponsorship, contact TC Leonard at 888-255-9140.
