A multistory hotel and conference center is part of the vision for a major retail shopping center planned near 159th Street and the Interstate 355 tollway. The 40-acre Twin Maples complex would feature 250,000 square feet of hotel, retail, restaurant, entertainment and corporate office space -- all with a goal of keeping the natural wooded beauty of the land, developers say.

BRIDGE OUT AHEAD
Lockport bridge closed for the summer
The Ninth Street (Illinois Route 7) Bridge in Lockport will close for almost four months beginning Monday, May 5. Workers will perform a $1.9 million resurfacing project on the structure, which spans the Des Plaines River and Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal. For suggested detour routes and more information, see attached maps and story. Also, check out the Illinois Department of Transportation to learn more about the project.

The Will County Forest Preserve District periodically conducts controlled prairie burns on various district properties to restore native prairie plants. The district did a burn at the Renwick Preserve in Plainfield which was covered in this Herald News video produced by John Patsch.

Nick Gabor didn't know he was Plainfield's Hometown Hero until Thursday night. Gabor, 23, a Marine recently home from Iraq, was recognized as such by WGN AM-720 radio during a remote broadcast from downtown Plainfield.

Chester Bryant spent the week leading up to the Southwest Prairie Conference boys track and field meet working out getting out of the blocks quicker. Then, he put on a new white-hot racing suit and blasted past his Plainfield North High School teammate and friend Dominique Ware to win the 100 meters.


Things could not have been any closer in Thursday's SouthWest Suburban Blue Conference high school boys track and field meet. Lockport and Bolingbrook battled it out for top honors before the championship was decided in the final event.




Stefanich's to reopen with new owner, menu
It has been closed for more than eight years, but the old Stefanich's restaurant is slated to reopen in June. Stefanich's, on the north end of downtown Joliet, opened in 1933 but closed in 1999. Since then, there have been a few unsuccessful attempts to open it again.
