Update, more details: Michael Pearson, the 21-year-old Bolingbrook man who died in the Fort Hood massacre Thursday, was remembered as "the angel of the family," a good student and a virtuoso musician who relished time with family and friends.

Calling fowl over chicken arguments
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Lockport will vote on whether to lift its chicken ban. Plenty of upstanding municipalities, including Naperville, allow chickens in backyards. They're a good source of local, sustainable food. But plenty of people have a knee-jerk reaction and think they should be banned everywhere? But their arguments just crack under examination.

Five turnovers spell end for LW East
Five turnovers spelled disaster for Lincoln-Way East in a 17-16 loss to O'Fallon in the second round of the 7A playoffs on Friday night. The victory moves O'Fallon (8-3) on to face East St. Louis or Minooka in next weekend's quarterfinals. Lincoln-Way East (9-2) is eliminated from the second round for the second straight season.


Home buyers tax credit renewed
First-time home buyers have been getting tax credits of up to $8,000 since January as part of the economic stimulus package enacted earlier this year. But with the program scheduled to expire at the end of November, the House voted 403-12 Thursday to extend and expand the tax credit to include many buyers who already own homes. The Senate approved the measure Wednesday, and the White House said President Obama would sign it today.
