When school boards announce new contracts for superintendents, they often give just the base salary and how much the board will contribute to the superintendent's pension fund. What they don't normally mention are the additional wages -- yet taxpayers are still footing the bills.

Retiring chief is Plainfield's finest
When Don Bennett took over as Plainfield's police chief in 1985, the village was working on getting its first traffic signal installed at Route 59 and Lockport Street. Despite the smaller population, crime was similar back then, he said. Bennett, 64, retired Nov. 15 after about 24 years as police chief.

Hilltoppers roll into finals with 54-7 win
Sophomore Anthony Maddie hooked up with Malin Jones on two touchdown passes within 9 seconds in the final minute of the second quarter to extend Joliet Catholic Academy's halftime lead to 32-7, and the Hilltoppers went on to bury Peoria Richwoods 54-7 in Saturday's Class 5A semifinal.

Laski-led Celtics clamp down in win over Danville
Zac Plantz supplied pressure off the edge and forced a poor punt. Ray Ames intercepted two passes. And Steve Laski scored his second postseason touchdown in as many weeks. The three emerged as ring leaders for a Providence Catholic defensive unit that buckled down in a 30-21 victory over Danville in the 6A football semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Whitsell Field.

Bolingbrook musician dreams of silver screen
Allen Cotton didn't win the annual Drum-Off District Finals at the Guitar Center in North Chicago, but the Bolingbrook musician is still pleased with his other victory. In late October, Cotton, 20, was crowned the local winner at the Guitar Center in Joliet. It was the first time he's won the title in his four years of competing.
