Glenbard South holds off Vernon Hills for 5A win
Most teams might pack it in trailing 33-0. But Vernon Hills High School rode the right arm and legs of DaVaris Daniels to nearly pull off a stunner, falling 33-27 to host Glenbard South Saturday in an IHSA Class 5A playoff game.
Daniels, who started the game at receiver, completed 13 of 25 passes for 151 yards. He added 65 yards on the ground on 18 carries, featuring touchdown runs of 1, 2 and 2 yards.

“A game is never over until you see all zeroes,” Daniels offered. “You always have to believe you can get it done, and you might get it done at the end.”

The third Daniels' TD cut the deficit to 33-27 with :35 remaining. But the onside kick attempt failed to work, allowing Glenbard South to run out the clock.
Glenbard South (9-2) took advantage of four Cougar turnovers to build the 33-point lead. Raider quarterback Trace Wanless led the charge, rushing for three touchdowns in the first half. The other key players in Vernon Hills' comeback attempt were Evan Spencer (8-88 receiving; 6-27 rushing, TD) and linebacker E.J. Lannan (14 tackles). The loss closed out an 8-3 season for the Cougars.
