Strauss keys run for Warriors

December 23, 2008

Jonny Strauss may be a spot up shooting guard, but Monday night he proved he can pass, too.

The Waubonsie Valley senior guard finished with 10 points but had five assists and keyed a second-quarter run that led to a 71-59 win over Glenbard North on opening night of the Warrior Classic Tournament.

"I thought we did a nice job of making extra passes and that's something we haven't done much this year," said Waubonsie coach Steve Weemer, whose team is 5-4 and has won three straight.

He also got a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) from senior post player Roy McElroy and 20 points from Jelani Johnson.

Two of McElroy's baskets came early in the second quarter off feeds from Strauss during a 15-0 run.

"We need that from Roy and the next couple of games we have to go inside, too," said Weemer.

James Fleming, who had a game-high 21 points, kept the Panthers (5-6) within striking distance through much of the second half, but they could never cut the lead under 12.

"What was really key there in the third quarter and again in the fourth, whenever they would hit a 3, we would come back and score," said Weemer.

Hinsdale Central 53, Marmion Academy 40 -- The Red Devils led 21-18 at the break and steadily widened the margin in the second half. Junior Jason Rafferty scored 12 points and Clay Foster added 10 to lead Hinsdale Central (3-4).

Senior guard Sean Fichtel had a game-high 15 points for the Cadets, who drop to 5-6.

Prairie Central 45, Yorkville 43 -- Luke Parece scored 12 points for Yorkville and Tavis Gibson nine on the final night of the Ottawa Tournament.

Bogan 55, Kaneland 44 -- At the Marengo Tournament, David Dudzinski scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Knights.

Aurora Christian 55, Lisle 53 -- The Eagles improved to 3-4 behind 17 points from Juwanza Wright and 12 points and nine boards from Nate Hill.

Fieldcrest 68, Plano 52 -- The Reapers were close in the third place game of the Hall Tournament after three quarters, but Fieldcrest pulled away with a 23-8 fourth quarter. Ryan Campisi led Plano with 17 points while Harold Ridgeway posted 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Herscher 61, Plano 47 -- In a makeup game postponed by last week's inclement weather, Ridgeway had 11 points and five rebounds for Plano.
