STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
Pau Schneider reaches to pet Sammie, a 3-month-old Jack Russell mix who just met Schneider's black pug, 8-year-old Penny, Sunday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church's blessing of the pets in Geneva. (Tyler Stoffel/Special to the Beacon News)
Brody and Piper didn't seem to mind getting wet as they waited in the rain outside of the old Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. The two dogs were most likely unaware of what they were doing among dozens of other pets and their human umbrella-holding owners last weekend. But Berit Lubben, 7, and her sister Raegan, 5, were all smiles knowing that Brody and Piper were about to be blessed by Pastor Claudia Nalven of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Geneva.

Hindu and Buddhist priests chanted sacred hymns and cascaded flowers and grains of rice over a 3-year-old girl who was appointed a living goddess Tuesday in Nepal. Wrapped in red silk and adorned with red flowers in her hair, Matani Shakya received approval from the priests and President Ram Baran Yadav in a centuries-old tradition.

A.J. Pierzynski looked around the clubhouse and started to smile. ''One word to describe this year? Roller coaster,'' the White Sox catcher said without a pause. Getting past the "piranha"-filled waters was tough enough for the White Sox. It took getting the Minnesota Twins out of their home-tank advantage for an extra game — and playing it in ‘‘blackout’’ conditions — before the Twins finally grinded their teeth too small to bite. But this is different. This is having to deal with a shark. Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre brought their winning postseason ways to the Los Angeles Dodgers — and Wrigley Field. James Loney hit a go-ahead grand slam off a wild Ryan Dempster, Ramirez and Russell Martin homered and the new-look Dodgers beat the Cubs 7-2 in their NL playoff opener Wednesday night.

Marmion Academy priest spent 3 months in Iraq
The Iraq War is not popular. That doesn't mean good things don't happen there. Last spring, before Fr. Paul Weberg deployed to Iraq for three months as a U.S. Army chaplain, I'd see him after school -- tall and thin enough to be mistaken for a marathoner -- running on the Marmion Academy track.

Mortgage relief deal
Sandra Guy: Nearly 11,000 Illinoisans with Countrywide mortgages -- most of them in the Chicago area -- are expected to get help to avoid foreclosure after Countrywide's new owner, Bank of America, agreed to an $8.7 billion settlement with Illinois and 10 other states. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office helped resolve a lawsuit that alleged Countrywide put people into loans, mostly subprime loans, that the would-be homeowners could not afford.
